I loved this game at first but I didn’t really care for it in the end. Like others have said, I felt very punished by the RNG with some runs feeling doomed from the start. It sucked to get trapped and have to call the day early. I tried focusing on getting the permanent upgrades but it just felt like a grind.
I’m sure some guides could have helped me but I’d rather not finish a single player game than rely on a guide.
I wouldn’t dissuade anyone from trying it, it’s worth checking out for sure. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it
I enjoyed BP up to a point. Got to room 46 and had good fun getting there, but after that it became a real slog.
I wanted to know more and had some threads to pull on, but now it was a game about constantly failing runs and learning nothing because the RNG didn’t fall in my favour or, worse, the rooms and/or items I needed finally appeared but I ran out of steps before I could do anything with them.
Ended up uninstalling, and it really soured me on the whole experience even though it was all post-credits.
I still think it’s worth playing if you enjoy puzzle games, but it can also be incredibly frustrating.
I’m someone who gets slapped in the face over and over with a large, wet trout by RNG, everywhere I go. And BP felt brutal until I started noticing some draft spawning rules. Decided to cheat a little and looked that up, and that allowed me to take advantage of the system to help me get almost all the way to the final secrets of the game at the time (way past Room 46). That, along with the various permanent upgrades and tips on gem management the game gives you.
I’ve otherwise been punished by red rooms even when those rooms are made Rare. Still happens after learning that mechanic too, and I still have runs where I have to end the day after just going 3 ranks deep, but the game feels just a bit more managable overall.
Yeah, I feel like with usage of the RNG control the game affords you and smart drafting it’s not that big of a deal outside of maybe a small handful of things.
And honestly, there aren’t even all that many red rooms that are super punishing in the late game. It’s mainly Archives, Maid’s Chambers and Lost & Found that can really punish you. Although Lost & Found set to common can be pretty interesting, if you get it early when you don’t have any items it’s basically no downside all upside. Actually if I got the chance to play it again I would spec into the Red Room synergy build, I feel like it can be pretty fun and strong.
Ha! Funnily enough, Archives is almost always what I end up drafting from a Darkroom when I can’t yet turn the power on, or when I just run out of gems and redraws, and Archives was the only selectable room.
But yup, once you’ve sort of get the hang of making sure you’re stocked up on gems per run, and have a good way to get enough coins (trying not to share too much here in case anyone wants to discover that for themselves), and especially when you’re no longer just chasing Room 46, the RNG isn’t that important and maybe even ignorable in the grand scheme of things.
I feel like the Darkroom classic is the Lavatory for me. Whenever I gamble it’s always the goddamn lav haha 😂
“Oh? Testing luck are we? I know just the reward for you! 🚽”
Same, I found the RNG mechanic utterly mean-spirited. I get why RNG has its proponents, but I’ve never played a game that seemed to have so much contempt for the player and their time, where you can be doing everything right and get punished repeatedly for it.
RNG is one thing, but this engine needed tweaks so that it’s actually fun, too, and not so damned frustrating. After 30+ hrs I uninstalled and said Never Again.
I don’t know if I’d call it mean-spirited myself, but it certainly gets tiresome to try to solve a puzzle while someone is deliberately withholding some of the pieces.
Withholding while actively teasing that it is withholding; and then giving you choices of Only Red Rooms 4x turns in a row. …that last bit is why I say mean-spirited. RNG needs to be better balanced IMHO
While RNG does become a frustrating factor for some things in the ultra lategame, you’re also afforded quite a lot of control as you’re progressing. For the majority of the play in the post Room 46 bit of the game (ie: the majority of the game) I felt like I had enough RNG manipulation. But then, I also really just enjoyed the drafting gameplay and strategically approaching it in how and where you placed what rooms and how to best use rarity adjustment for rooms and so on.
Was my GOTY last year, is probably my second-favourite game ever, and is simply the most impressive and fantastic puzzle game ever constructed. Easily worth the full price, even if you “only” reach Room 46. However, the game goes much much deeper than that, and you can keep scratching and scratching and scratching and you will only find more and more under the surface.
Also has an absolute banger of a soundtrack, minimalistic and understated while still being perfectly atmospheric and impactful. That bass clarinet is just wonderful.
Absolutely the best deduction/detective style game I’ve ever played! And yes it seemingly never ends haha, if you really want to get wrapped up in an intriguing mystery you can do no better!
They recently put it in a bundle with Outer Wilds, Tunic, Animal Well, and Fez. I haven’t played Fez, but the other three games are some of my favorites of all time as well
I think as a pure deduction experience, Return Of The Obra Dinn is also up there. But it’s obviously much smaller in scope.
So you’ve never played disco Elysium cool good to know
Disco Elysium is a game about a detective, it’s not really a detective game however. There aren’t really any elements of deduction-based gameplay. It’s a playable novel, really.
It’s my number one game of all time (with Blue Prince at #2), but if you want puzzles and deductions and actually finding clues and putting things together yourself in the manner of a detective then Blue Prince or Return of the Obra Dinn is what you want, not Disco Elysium.
If I was sure I was able to pay rent in two months I’d definitely be buying this. It seems to be right up my alley.
I’ve had a lot of fun playing Blue Prince. You gotta write everything down meticulously.
The only issue that I’ve consistently run into is the logic puzzles of the Parlor Room. It starts out fine but about mid way into the increasing difficulty the logic just breaks down entirely and the puzzles frequently become unsolvable so you just have to guess which box has the gems.
I never got to the late game…does it really become unsolvable? You have to just guess??
I’ve spent an embarrassing amount of time on a few but there was always a way to figure it out
There are some where the True/False logic breaks down and it becomes neither true nor false, or introduces paradox that makes it unsolvable.
WOW that’s so obnoxious. If I wasn’t already burned out, I’d probably have quit the first time I ran into that
For what it’s worth, I don’t think it’s true. The Parlour Puzzle does become increasingly complicated by the end, and to some extent obnoxious, but I don’t believe any are unsolvable.
Good to know. Some of the ones I did FELT impossible until I figured it out
If you search online there are plenty of posts of people claiming to have found “unsolveable” parlour puzzles, and every one I’ve seen ends up being actually solveable and was simply a result of a rules misunderstanding or wrongful (or) missed assumption. For example: we must enter the Parlour Game with the assumption that the game can be solved. So we can always exclude any configurations of true/false that would lead to an unknowable end result. This is an assumption many miss. When boxes with multiple statements get introduced, there is also the fact that one box must have only true statements, and one must have only false statements. This is another one many miss that lead to wrongfully called “unsolveable” puzzles.
That is very believable to me. This game was clearly made with love and care, my WOW was genuine shock that they’d do that in such a “smart” game.
When I got stuck I’d work backwards. Assume one box had the gems and then test the hints against that. If it failed, try the next box. Sometimes I had to do it a few times before it clicked
If you’re struggling with the Parlor Puzzle there is a room upgrade that makes it easier.
spoiler
You can select the option to get two keys so you can guess twice.
Ah yeah I picked a different upgrade
