and learn to know the difference between anti-zionism. most day to day life you’ll see people trying to pass off a notion that anti-zionism is anti-semitism from positions of power. but here lemmy it’s far too common for someone to push anti-semitism under the guise of anti-zionism.

zionism is an ideology built on hate. you cannot counter it with hate. you can only counter hate with empathy. sometimes that empathy will take the form of supporting people countering violence with violence in desperation to survive. pacifism is not an activity. it is a social value. in order for there to be peace, there must be people who weild their access to violence to protect vulnerable people from those who would weild violence for their own petty and ephemeral pleasure.

what’s more is that zionism is not a universally held jewish belief. the majority of the diaspora is against israel’s apartheid state. we don’t like it. it looks far too much like the apartheid states we lived in with the only difference being the aesthetic of the state. we find that shit offensive.

Why does everybody insist on calling enemy occupiers, “settlers”?

When Russian civilians move in to annexed Ukrainian lands they’re not called settlers. Settler suggests peaceful civilians moving somewhere they’re allowed to inhabit, to start a new life.

    They’re invaders. Occupiers. Thieves.

    Settlers my arse.

      1. you’re absolutely right, settler is the word the colonists want you to use
      2. historically, i can’t really think of any settlers who were peacefully domesticating unloved land. i think you can really only look at pre-historic first movers as non-violent “settlers” since anyone who’s been a settler since the invention of the written word has settled land against the interests and will of the indigenous people of those lands

The colonizing of North America, especially in the first century after its “discovery,” was often done by settlers moving into empty land. Except that the only reason it was empty is the inhabitants had already been killed by disease brought by the Spanish. Within 150 years after contact, the population of the Americas was reduced by 93%.

additionally, eurocentric world views tend to see nomadic people as less than. for the Apache, Blackfoot, Comanche, Crow, Lakota, Nez Perce, Ojibwe, Sioux, and i’m sure many others, that “empty” land didn’t look empty at all, even with their numbers reduced

L‘ Espresso just gave the term „Israeli Settler“ an associated image the Israeli regime decidedly dislikes.

I think that’s perfect TBH. Let them use euphemisms (like collateral damage, alternative facts) as much as they want.

Use it too and then rip away the mask with a photo like this.

yeah the award is specifically for american journalism. it was established to callenge the hegemony established by the robber barons who in the late 1800s were buying up all the legacy newspapers, undermining independent journalism

imagine if like… jeff bezos bought the washington post. that’s basically what was going on. and because the robber barons weilded so much political power, the award required one of those robber barons setting up the award in his will. because he certainly wasn’t gonna cede that power in life.

the only valuable journalistic outlets from that time were local newspapers run kind of secret, and Mother Jones which was at the time covering how the industrial boom in the urban north was coming at the cost of coal miners’ blood

You will never convince me that Israel is not literally just trying to follow every antisemitic stereotype on purpose.

IDF soldier 1: “Hey, guys, you know what would be funny. Ha, what if we drank the blood of our victims babies? Ya, know, because that was an antisemitic lie the Nazis told about Jews. But, ya know, we do it ironically.”

IDF soldier 2: “You mean like pretend we are doing it? Like when we take pictures in our victims lingerie. Like, ironically though. You guys aren’t actually taking their lingerie back with you. Are you?”

    IDF soldier 1: “…”

    IDF soldier 2: “…”

IDF soldier 3: “So, when are we drinking baby blood?”

In the 1948 Nakba the IDF poisoned wells in Palestine with typhoid, then cried antisemitism when they were accused of poisoning wells, due to the age old antisemitic trope. They literally did the thing that Jews throughout the ages have been falsely accused of and often died for, so that they could block any investigation. Words fail to describe the cynicality of that evil.

Its not completely a stereotype. Early judaism was temple animal sacrifice based. Going back a bit further, its a historical fact that they did kill children for a fertility ritual. Its true that they dont do it lately but they used to.

It’s entirely a stereotype, popularized by European autocratic régimes as a way to channel popular resentment away from nobility and royalty.

At the time when ancient Israelites were sacrificing animals, the practice is the norm all around the Levant, the Fertile Crescent and the Mediterranean, so nothing special. If you want to “go back a bit further” you’re not talking about Judaism anymore but about earlier Canaanite and Mesopotamian religions.

If it was entirely a stereotype, then why is it factually true enough that rabbis are writing about it as a way to reconcile ancient texts with modern understanding of the religious concepts, and not framing it as a hostile stereotype?

The whole basis of the religion is ancient texts of exactly that era you are now playing down here, is it not?

This is like “it was promised 3000 years ago” levels of irrelevant.

If we go by time for relevance isnt everything in Jewish and Christian holy books irrelevant too then? When does Jewish history start again, can you remind me?

And you bring up nazis if I mention historical facts you dont want to talk about? I’m not a nazi. I beleive in universal human rights and dignity. Thats what so many of my comments are so very anti-israel. They are the ones whose actions are so like nazi actions, and you are the one helping them by throwing around accusations whenever you don’t like historical facts. I think the nazi here is much more you than me, but hey, you do you, Herr friendo.

Didnt Isaac, the second of the 3 patriarchs of judaism, try to sacrifice his son at gods command only to be stopped at the last possible second by an angel, who gave instruction to Isaac to sacrifice a ram instead?
The takeaway for jewish people in that story is that they should no longer sacrifice their children, but animals instead. So um why was that story ever even needed if it was completely irrelevant to judiasm?

But everyone loses their mind when we talk about the history of sacrifice in Judaism at all, it seems. Its an unfortunate fact of history that it was done, and you cant revise your way out of that fact. Little bit late to control and whitewash that narrative, that ship has sailed whether you like it or not. Judaism evolved over time and is not what it once was, thats a fact. You can google “when was human sacrifice outlawed in Judaism” and you will see it was a reform of judaism, not a founding idea. Fact.

I suppose you could try to burn a bunch of books to try to get rid of those historical facts? I think people like yourself burning books would be right on brand, right? You’ll need to burn down google too I guess.

You seem to have replaced the Jewish supremacy of an ethnostate like Israel with an unhealthy and unhelpful hyperfixation that seems to accept everything that Israel says about Jewish people but just reaches a different conclusion.

It’s like if Israel said “yes Jews are actually magic money people, but it’s good”. You would just say “Yes, they are actually magic money people. But, it’s bad”.

You’re also acting like the fundamentalist views of a religion represent all people of that religion.

What is even helpful in what you’re saying? Your rambling about stories that are literally a part of Jewish, Christian, and Muslim beliefs.

They’re not pigtails, they’re called “peyot”. Orthodox Jewish men grow theirs out because it’s part of the traditional dress code. In other parts of the world, they’re tucked under the yarmulke. But in occupied Palestine, it’s been in vogue to leave them hanging down.

Fuck Israel generally, but don’t be ignorant.

they’ve been called “pigtails” by outright antisemites since the late 1800s as a comentary on the curly textured hair of ashkenazi jews. just in case anyone’s curious where that term originates. i don’t assume that’s how most people in this modern time use the term, so i didn’t downvote since the other poster might have jost been thinking of the modern common girl’s hairstyle. but it still hit me REAL wrong

I dont take any of israel’s definition of the world seriously, that includes their “in vogue” hairstyles while committing war crimes. They lost me when they defined anything they dont like as “antisemitism”. They lost enough of my respect that I dont agree to defining anything on their terms anymore. Not words, not actions, not anything having to do with their ideas. They live in my world now, exclusively. I dont care what you and they call their hair style, or who you link to “antisemitism”. So those are ponytails. If you want to kowtow to their definitions thats on you and not my problem.

So “dont be ignorant” right back at both of you supremacist apologists. You can jam your implicit demand that I understand and honor these war criminals concepts directly up your rear. They deserve zero respect and explicit rejection in any avenue of civilized society, including their personal preferences around language.

They are murdering people and you are worried that I get their ponytail names right. You two are both nuts.

ponytail i take absolutely zero issue with. like i said, the issue i took with your comment was personal to me to the extent i wouldn’t have said anything unless someone mentioned they’re not called pigtails.

i take a great deal more offense to what israel does as a human than to what you said as i said in a comment further down about how zionism is just one expression amongst many of jewish identity, and that it has failed multiple times before.

i do not criticize those who criticize israel for criticizing israel. to criticize israel and israelis is right and good. they are on the wrong side of history and they will be remembered as poorly as any other authoritarian regime ever has.

especially in a socialist space we have to acknowledge the harm israel performs at large globally in order to enable their genocide. their digital panopticon was funded by bosses and bankers who wanted to spy on their employees at work to boost productivity. the same technology that tells your boss when you haven’t moved your mouse in 15 minutes is the same technology the IOF uses to monitor and disrupt popular front actions.

Way to have zero reading comprehension what so ever.

This is like making fun of trump for his weight. There are much better things to point out that wont harm innocent people that you may know and love. You are being ignorant and hateful. Focus your hate to the important shit or go take a nap.

I am being hateful yes. I hate genociders and supremacists and theres nothing wrong with that. Its good to not be at all tolerant of those things or those people. They do not deserve my tolerance. Its a free service that sane, thinking people provide in society. You are welcome.

You should be conscious of rule 7 off to the right, do you see that no zionism and no genocide support rules there? Maybe you got lost looking for the zionism and fascism threads?

I reject your finely minced framing and choose to blanket hate the whole massively evil country, thanks.

I feel like pedantic parsing like yours dishonestly runs defense against those on the left attacking the core of the problem: which is the constitution/basic laws/existsnce of Israel as a state. Arguments like: “Sure 82% of Israelis want to forcefully deport every arab from all land they control, but some tiny percentage of them (way under 18%) dont support that so how can you be against the whole country???”

You place yourself bodily between people seeking justice for all humanity vs Israel, and use the tiny proportion of Israeli leftists as unwilling hostages against global calls for Israeli accountability for genocide and overwhelming support for ethnic cleansing and a continuation of 80 years of murderous abuse and state sponsored theft. I say the israeli government cant continue and cant/wont change, so it has to end, and that region be put under some adult leadership.

You don’t believe that do you. By the nature of all your previous publicly available comments, you think Israel must exist for the Jewish people, by the Jewish people. So I think your opinion is crap, and your framing in this instance is contrived, dishonest and manipulative.

Can we be racist against fascists?

        I think yes.

Thank you for the context, though, for when Lemmy encounters non-Zionist Jews with these hairstyles.

No because then you’re not attacking the fascism. You’re attacking their ethnicity and by extension everybody of that ethnicity, fascist or not.

          • Look at that Jewish fascist. Fuck him and all his fascist friends.
          • Look at that Jewish fascist. Fuck him and all his Jewish friends.

          See the difference?

Yeah. I remember episode of Chappo Trap House where they were making fun of Itamar Ben Gvir’s name, and I just turned it off and unsubbed. Like, as an antifascist Jew, who grew up in these spaces, yeah there were always Jewish fascists and zionists, but like Peyot and names like that are just normal. Just like, wtf, you guys are just showing their whole ass.

Your example extends to beyond the fascist though.

I’m particularly interested in not giving respect to fascists themselves unlike the way I would afford respect to people of groups those fascists would otherwise belong to.

I still stand by my belief that bigotry (and other strategies) towards fascists and the intolerant is OK so long as that bigotry starts and stops with those people. Bigotry towards non-fascists and the tolerant is NOT OK.

Using racism or sexism or ageism is appropriate in these ways. In no way am I extending those beliefs towards others. That’s strawmanning.

You can’t “use racism or sexism or ageism” against some subset of people without harming the others, it always extends beyond the person you’re targeting because you are targeting their race/sex/age not them or their fascist actions
