People who consumed at least one sugar‑sweetened beverage per day had more than twice the risk of developing gastric cancer compared with those who rarely drank them.

I’m not a doctor, but it states diet soda is not without risk either because of aspartame. Wasn’t that because the rats in the study were fed highly excessive doses of it? The human equivalent would be like drinking 100 cans of Diet Coke a day for years wouldn’t it?
They did say “previously labelled as a possible carcinogen” which can probably be said about most foods. It seems like aspartame is pretty low risk.
Although low calorie soda are still carbonated and acidic so it’s going to eat away at your teeth.

Don’t want to nitpick, but don’t want the argument that broccoli will give you horrific ass cancer to gain any momentum.
I’m going to defend myself lol, there was probably a study done at some point that found a link between broccoli and cancer and then never replicated. Just like aspartame!
Defend away, I’m just guarding against rubes that will use it as ‘proof!’
Thank Ahura Mazda for straws.
Aspartame is metabolized into methanol which breaks down intk formaldehyde which is carcinogenic. The quantities required to actually produce a significant amount compared to what our bodies produce naturally would be very high, so like you said, you would need to drink significant amounts 10s-100s of cans per day) to reach a level consistent with significantly increasing your risk of cancer.
There may be other side effects on health depending on what type of artificial sweetener you use such as triggering an insulin response without actual blood sugar increase, resulting in increased insulin tolerance, so limiting yourself is still a good idea but it is likely a better alternative to normal sugar.
