I wonder how they’re stopping the flow of US weaponry, because that’s a big reason why the cartel is armed to the teeth. That said they also should not reveal their tactics so hopefully if the US empire truly sunsets they’ll tell us their strategy afterwards.

Full article is paywalled even at the archive links. Anyone got full text?

In the meantime, the comparison in the headline is rather insulting. Imagine being one of the world’s largest nations, up and coming economically with a government ever more staunchly progressive and independent of foreign coercion, then being compared uncritically to a tiny little US puppet state.

It’s like comparing Turkey to Israel.

Bukele argues that there is no alternative to his model of crime reduction, which includes a persistent state of emergency, mass incarcerations, and widespread human-rights violations. Institutional reforms move too slowly to mitigate the daily harm caused by gangs. No one, he claims, has ever come up with a security model as successful as his.

The comparison and argument seems extremely pointed to me. They’re not comparing them statistically they’re comparing them philosophically.

      Eh, not really?

There is obviously a size differential between Mexico and El Salvador which makes a big difference on what measures Mexico can implement compared to El Salvador due to the size difference and the federalized nature of Mexican politics. Yet, the importance is to show that there is an alternative to Bukele’s dictatorship model in restoring rule of law over organized crime.

Though few have noticed, Mexico has reduced its daily homicide count by 41% over the past 18 months, owing to President Claudia Sheinbaum’s pioneering new strategy for confronting organized crime. Such a sharp reduction is an historic achievement for Mexico – and puts Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele’s thuggish methods to shame.

MEXICO CITY—El Salvador’s homicide rate, previously among the world’s highest, has dropped dramatically under President Nayib Bukele’s authoritarian rule.

This is not so good news. Peace is not profitable in the unbound neoliberal capitalist utopia that we have that privilege of enjoying worldwide
