Honestly I am so disappointed. I have wanted a new Starfox game for so long. I can’t believe they are remaking the same game again. There are only 7 Starfox titles across 30 years including this one. 4 of those are just the same damn game. Why is this the only franchise Nintendo is completely incapable of creating something new for?

My hope is this is a reboot to hopefully start making new titles in the same style after this. What they probably wanted to do with Star Fox Zero, but the Wii U failed miserably.

Well, that was a fecking delight! Star Fox is out on Nintendo Switch 2 June 25th. A remake of Star Fox 64 with redesigned graphics and new features.

Star Fox 64 is one of my favorite games ever and this game looks gorgeous. Still not really enough for me to get a Switch 2. Especially when my Switch is functioning fine.

Switch 1 is also powerful enough to run this. I know Nintendo wants to sell more switch 2, but it is just an example of a game being exclusive to a console.

This is why am sticking to linux gaming.

And also when Switch 2 has just nothing going for it.

Like, what am I supposed to get excited about? What’s the system seller? What the hot game I’m supposed to lose my mind over?

I don’t see it. I see a company which at one point in my life DOMINATED the video game space. Then, shot themselves in the foot several times, and willingly gave up their number 1 spot.

Then I watched them reinvent themselves. They became the quirky underdog with style and an asthetic that was colorful, and vibrant. When the PS2 was an industry juggernaut, it was a black box with a blue logo, and nothing more. Meanwhile gamecube was bright purple, the controller was multicolored, and the system had a handle. It was quirky.

And thats what they remained until this. The Switch 2. A black rectangle. No design. No personality. Forgetable games. And price increases across the board.

You know what I got instead? The Retroid Pocket Flip 2. The one made to look like it was gamecube inspired.

Do you think 20 years from now, novelty devices will be nostolgic for Switch 2’s asthetic? I don’t even know what that would be! At least switch 1 had the red and blue joycon look. Seriously, if you had to draw something Switch 2 inspired, how would you convey that???

And also when Switch 2 has just nothing going for it.

Everything can’t appeal to everyone all the time and that’s ok. For me, playing Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild at 60fps was worth it. I loved Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, Cyberpunk 2077 and Donkey Kong Bananza. I enjoyed Metroid Prime 4 too, I haven’t tried it on the Switch 1, but it looks and runs amazing on the Switch 2.

I do agree the design of the Switch 2 is very conservative, even compared to the colored joycons of the first one. But that’s what made sense to them to make after the success of Switch 1. There’s still some quirkiness there with the mouse controls and the Virtual Boy accessory (whether this last one is worth it or not, is a different discussion, and also the ownership of the games…). They didn’t have to do a reproduction of one of their biggest flops so you can play it with the Switch, yet they did.

The Game Cube is awesome, quirky and looks amazing, but it didn’t sell well at the time.

They’ve been on a cycle, they’re the most creative when they’re not doing well (Game Cube to Wii, Wii U to Switch). I don’t believe they’ll just go into PlayStation mode and keep releasing Nintendo Switch 3, 4, but we’ll see.

It’s fine if the Switch 2 is not for you. Maybe eventually a new 3D Mario or a new Zelda will get you excited, maybe you’re over Nintendo and that’s ok. But for some of us, the Nintendo Switch 2 has a lot going for it and we’re really enjoying it.

Wow, I really don’t like the character redesigns. “StarFox characters… but in real life” seems a bit uninspired. I think the rest of the visuals look great though.

What if Assault is hidden away in the game too? In 64, players could unlock an on-foot multiplayer mode if they medaled all the planets. Maybe, just maybe, when those truly devoted to Mr. McCloud get all of the medals in the new one, on-foot multiplayer opens up with the entirety of Star Fox Assault’s multiplayer.

Haha, of course it’s 64 again! XD

But I haven’t played any of the other remakes and reboots since the original and this one looks really nice, so I guess this is the one for me.

I don’t think this’ll be a hit for either of us, but talking about the future gives us shared connections (plus, we did just see Fox in the new Mario movie).

They could have just designed new levels, instead of doing ANOTHER remake of 64. Yes it’s the best Starfox, but we have so many ways to play it already. Just give us new content ffs.

I mean… 64 is the best game out of the series. Would have preferred a new game to a remake though.

Assault is such an underrated title. While watching this trailer I imagined what if they remade Assault after this?! (And hopefully new titles in the future…)

I am not sure about the voice direction in this one. It loses the mild campiness that was behind everything in 64. If there’s not a “I can’t stop iiiitttt!!” equivalent, I don’t want it.

    That’s a surprise!

As someone who has never played any Starfox game (I tried them on NSO but felt too dated), I am happy about the remake. Hopefully this means we will get a new game in the series too.

Yes! This is my hope too. A reboot to start making new games with this style in the future 🙌 And I’ve played Star Fox 64 a lot, but I’m definitely getting this one. It looks amazing!

While I loved Star Fox 64… I’m not sure I wanna spend $80 on a game I beat 100s of times as a 13 year old.

I was going to say “keep going, you’ll have to beat the price of gas for me to drive over to my parents’ house and dig the N64 out of the garage,” but I guess at $50 it’s cheaper just to buy it again…
