Ending the decades of trade sanctions might be a good step forward. Sanctions punish the poorest, the wealthy and powerful in any nation subject to sanctions miraculously find a way to maintain their lifestyles.
Oppressively authoritarian nations stay like that even without sanctions. Just look at places like Turkmenistan. It’s has similar levels of oppression to North Korea and isn’t on a sanction list. Or hell, just Saudi Arabia. The sanctions aren’t the issue, the shitty dictators are and the only solution is to stop funding their regimes… but the oil is too good
