Played some more of Darksiders 3 and Xuan Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains. Not much to add here.
Started couple of other games. Started Tom Clancy’s The Division with friends. I played a little bit of it a while ago, and while I liked the world building and the gameplay loop, but game started feeling repititive. Now playing with friends, so hopefully won’t have that issue. Played a few missions and so far so good.
Also started Hard West on Switch 2. It’s a turn based tactics game in wild west. It has couple of interesting mechanism, like luck. Each time someone shoots at you, your luck reduces (depending on distance, cover etc), and when your luck is down the shot hits you. You can also shoot people through cover. There is also an area map, where you can do a few things (depending on the campaign)
What about all of you? What have you been playing and/or plan to play?
I’ve just started Tears of the Kingdom after completing BotW a few months ago.
I still haven’t finished! But I did just buy a TOTK 1000-piece puzzle. I wish us both luck!
Oooh, that sounds fun!
That puzzle sounds cool. Never taken on a jigsaw puzzle, though a housemate flogs through a few.
My secret is pacing myself. I never work on the puzzle for longer than an hour at a time (or fifty pieces connected per session). It keeps me from being frustrated or from feeling overwhelmed.
How are you liking it, gong directly from BotW?
Yeah it’s good. I’m not feeling the same ‘wow’ I did, it’s more of a ‘whoah more fun’.
I took the few months off as a few advised to do.
I started Cult of the Lamb yesterday as well. I think I’ll have a bit of fun with it too.
Cult of the Lamb is a fun game from all reports. Enjoy!
Shmups again: Tiger-Heli, Twin Cobra, Fire Shark, and Flying Shark
I did buy Thank Goodness You’re Here. Lovely game but I rushed it.
Nice! Which one of these shmups you recommend as most noob friendly?
For beginners I’d recommend Drainus among traditional ("non bullet hell¨) shmups and Danmaku Unlimited 3 on the easiest settings for bullet hell.
And if you enjoy Danmaku Unlimited 3 I’d go for Crimzon Clover next, it’s one of the best games in the genre. It’s significantly harder even on Novice, but still beatable with some pratice.
Thanks, will add them to my list.
Oh that’s tough! I am awful at shmups, but also obsessed with them. I’ll try to suggest a few
- Crimzon Clover has different difficulty levels and modes to mess around with
- I didn’t have that much trouble with Cotton Fantasy (Cotton is a “cute” shmup)
- Batsugun Special Version
- Vimana
- Exo-Calibre is quite easy (this is a cute’em up)
I’ve probably only played about 30 different shmups, I can tell you that certain classics like R-Type are way harder than most shmups. Same goes for the Strikers games and Raiden too.
If you have Steam (I don’t) take advantage of the 2 hour return window and figure out if you like horizontal or vertical (Tate) shmups, bullet hell, danmaku, or frantic styles.
Saving the message. Will check them all out.
Pokemon ZA. I’m almost done. Rank A. I am enjoying it. I actually have to use items in the game. I like the new battle system. Selection of Pokémon okay. My new favorite one is GoGoat
Haven’t played ZA, but GoGoat looks nice.
I finished Xenoblade X just in time to not benefit from the Switch 2 upgrade! I ended the game with 99% survey completion because the last boss I needed to kill required me to farm too much Bonjelium; the problem being that minerals are the one type of material you can’t get with material tickets. I’ll grind whatever is necessary, but I draw the line at waiting for the items to come in slowly over time.
About the finale:
spoiler
I expected the big triangle in the sky to be a ‘final dungeon’ and wasn’t looking forward to it at all, because indoor areas were never any fun in the game. Why does the camera get so sluggish in that environment anyway? But to my surprise, the finale was a new open area to explore, playing to the game’s strengths! I liked it a lot and luckily I was a high enough level to not get attacked by everything.
I’m not a fan of the ending itself, though. The game made Mira seem like a special place, Professor B hints towards that and the fact that every species can communicate despite their different languages. Because of this, I thought the planet would make it through the final events after all, but it was destroyed and we go somewhere else. This makes everything we did feel kinda pointless. All we got in the end was the friends we made along the way but we’re still starting over. Worse than before, because we don’t have a city or anything to build a new one with. The ending is just not in the spirit of the game and doesn’t really address anything that was left open at the end of the original version.
But overall, this is my favorite Xenoblade, though that’s always been hard to say. The series tends to frustrate me because every game does something exceptionally well and is the worst in the series in some other way.
Replacing Xenoblade as my main game is Visions of Mana, a game I was surprised to find in my Steam library a few months ago. I thought it was still on my wish list! The Mana games on the SNES have been a big part of my early years and Visions always looked very gorgeous. I’ve only played a little bit, but I like what I’ve seen so far.
Monster Hunter Wilds got its latest (and final?) update. I’ve only tackled the new side quests so far and they brought back egg carrying for a Monster Hunter Stories collab quest! That was always my least favorite quest type, but they reworked the mechanics to make it much better, tolerable even. Next up is Arch-Tempered Arkveld, the first 10-Star quest. I’m scared…
I’m finally out and about in Fallout 3. I forgot how stressful it can be to be in a Bethesda city with everyone always talking. The desolate wastes suddenly feel a lot nicer~ I also have to get used to Bethesda physics again. I jump-scared myself by stepping on a skeleton and somehow launching it into my face…
I’d love to hear you expand on that
The series tends to frustrate me because every game does something exceptionally well and is the worst in the series in some other way.
What’s the issue with each 1, 2, and 3?
@slimerancher@lemmy.world is this the type of discussion that is allowed or should be in its own thread?
Yeah, this is fine. Create a new thread if you want to ask from whole community, for one to one, replying to the respective comment is perfectly fine.
This is completely subjective, of course, but I thought:
1 had the best world, but the worst side quests.
X had the best exploration, but the worst characters.
2 had the best combat, but Gacha.
3 had the best side quests, but the worst world.
There’s more I could say, but I limited it to the best and worst of each when directly compared. There’s a really good game we could piece together from these four!
I agree about Xenoblade X ending, wasn’t a big fan. Personally it’s my least favourite Xenoblade, for me Mechas changed the balance of the game, and made character stuff obselete. Of course I could always skip the mechas, but I don’t like to make games difficult for me when there is no need to.
Which isn’t to say I didn’t like the game, I just liked the other games much more.
Yeah, I think it’s the final update for MH: W, at least the base game. They are working on the expansion now.
It’s been a busy week and I’ve spent a lot of time dreaming of Little Rocket Lab while grading papers. I’ve hit the point in the game where there are no easy factory lines and the advanced assembly plants are a requirement for everything. The urge to start over is so strong because of that organizational instinct in my mind to keep a neat and efficient island. But my messy layout of conveyor belts is charming enough that I keep at it, delivering research materials and unlocking new items slowly.
I’m so glad I bought it!
As always, I’m playing Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is on hold because I’m still mad about getting trounced twice in a battle. It’ll be a while before FF pulls me back since I am in handheld mode as my knitting spouse binges through West Wing for the first time.
Oh! I’m running a 2nd session of a D&D one-shot today, too! Maybe we’ll get to the end this time?
I want to get Little Rocket Lab, but with Pokémon Pokopia and Tomodachi Life coming out soon, I’ll have my fill of farming / management game for the time. I am not sure yet which one of these I’ll buy, will probably wait for the review.
Good luck with your D&D session! (though I am a bit late for that 😀 )
Still Final Fantasy 7 Remake
How are you liking it so far?
It’s great. I like the additional characterization and the fighting. The only thing I miss are more open spaces but I know that that would be difficult to implement since the whole game takes place in Midgard.
Yeah. I haven’t played the second one (Rebirth?) yet, it should have more open spaces. At least they can add those, if they want.
I get recommended a video on why FFX and FFXIII are both corridors, but one works and the other doesn’t. I’ve been feeling like the remake is one long beautiful corridor as I play through it. It definitely feels larger than 1997’s Midgar.
I have never played XIII so I can’t say anything about it but X works for me because it is basically as linear as VII and IX, it just cuts the overworld parts.
Red Dead Redemption. The Switch 2 update is looking pretty great so far. And it’s impossible not to start a new RDR2 save after playing through RDR1, so that’s a plus as well.
Could you explain that? RDR is not my type of game, so I have no idea what you mean by impossible. Is the urge to start fresh just so exciting that starting over is a must?
Yes indeed!
Heh, have fun!
Playing Trails Beyond the Horizon!
Currently on Act 3, Van Route 4. The end of the previous act was a very interesting surprise and a great character moment.
Act 2, Van Route 3 Spoilers
Agnès telling Van she loves him is not something I expected to happen mid-game.
But it was a really good scene, with Van expressing how important she’s to him but rejecting her since he can’t see her as a romantic partner. I wonder if he was being completely honest there or was acting that way due to their age gap, or if he even has his feelings properly sorted out given all the baggage he’s still processing from this past. Still, that response was very much in-character for him, and I really appreciate the adult way the situation was handled.
But it doesn’t mean the the Van/Agnès/Elaine love triangle is over - Agnès is not giving up and claims she’ll him over despite the age gap, even if that takes many years.
Fully focused on Horizon so no progress on other games.
Where does this fall in your ranking of Trails games? Or is it too early to tell yet?
A bit early to tell. There’s a lot of things being set up in all three routes, so the payoff will say how this game will end up in my ranking.
But I will say it’s looking very promising so far.
That’s good to hear. Will wait for the final ranking.
