I consider profile pictures as a way to be more visually appealing, and a way to be recognizable more easily.

Why don’t you have a profile picture?

Wait there’s profile pictures? I just see usernames in the comment threads in Lemmy and that seems fine to me

    Why would I?

Why would I want to be recognizable?

I use link/content aggregators as my social media of choice, because I am interested in content and communities.

I don’t care about curating some kind of online persona or interacting with any. This isn’t Instagram.

I’m thirty to forty years old, I don’t need this shit.

We did just fine in IRC with no accounts just handles. Recognize me or don’t!

This is a place to be part of a crowd, not really about being recognized. I’m not here to make personal friends, nor a following.

I’m here for news and discussion. This doesn’t really require recognizability between threads

I work 100% remotely, and my day job doesn’t even have profile pics. When we meet, it’s a dozen cartoon images or memes as faces. No cams, no pics.

The side gig I’ve had for 20 years has never had a pic. These people wouldn’t recognize me if I walked in the office one day.

Why should I? We don’t see a value.

Because they are pointless and shouldn’t exist.

I don’t want random pictures being loaded when I just want to read articles, posts, and comments. This isn’t Facebook or Myspace. I’m not building a profile for people to look at. I’m reading and commenting.

They put extra burden on servers, apps, and mods. Someone has to be able to remove them if someone starts setting offensive pics like porn.

And in Jerboa they are almost as tiny as optical wavelength physics permits.

Didn’t even realize they exist until I took a very thorough look because of this post…

I use an app that doesn’t show profile pictures by default.

I apply a user tag to anyone I want to recognize.

I like not being particularly recognizable. Treat me like everyone else that you don’t know.

Because, I consider profile pictures to be a way to be more visually appaling, and a way to be recognizable more easily (thing that I do not want).
