    Big corps never really wanted people to be able to run their own software and have control over their devices. What they want is to sell appliances as opposed to general purpose computing devices.

        Secureboot does something or other I don’t understand, but it seems to restrict what you can install on your computer. And I’ve heard stories of BIOS software bricking itself when you turn off secure-boot.

          It’s not true, certainly can restrict the installing of certain apps which need admin privilegs, but it’s a malware scan beginning with the boot sector, avoiding root kit malware.
