I wanted to install Debian Linux after a weird journey with Gentoo Linux. Yeah. It's another one of these. But! Here me out! So I have some experience using Linux. Run some VMs for services I run in my home, I switched my surface book 3 (funnily enough) to ubuntu for my work computer as I was getting more and more frustrated by windows 11 and it turned out really good. Was able to completely get off windows and i didn't miss out on anything. Now. Ive been trying to migrate my gaming rig to Linux with... Not a lot of success. I have 3 monitors plugged into it, a Samsung crg49 and then 2 small no name brand monitors I like for websites and discord and stuff while I play on the Samsung monitor. On windows it works flawlessly. No Linux distro I've used has been able to handle it and I'm not sure how I should be approaching this. Running games has been fine. I use lutris and have been able to play pretty much everything I've wanted to with some tweaking. But whether a few hours or a few days, eventually I start having issues with the displays. Monitors will black out. Not boot. Eventually the whole system just stops working in a way that I can figure out. I have a ryzen 3700x, and a Nvidia 2080ti. 64GB of RAM. all my storage is nvme. I have tried most major distros. Mostly Ubuntu is what I have experience with. I have tried some others like nobara, but performance was awful, and display management was an issue. Ive never really installed other desktop environments other than what comes with those distros, so if it's a matter of "use distro x, but you need to install weyland" then sure. Just let me know that's something I need to do. 😋 So... What do you suggest I run? I really dont want to go back to windoze. It's just awful these days.

On Windows, KDE Plasma, and likely many other Desktops, if a window is fullscreen and you push the mouse to the top edge and click, it will close. Chrome-ium actually fixed that in their builtin buttons to work the same. Not on GNOME because there is a panel at the top, lol. But also not when using GTK apps on these desktops, where it should work. Instead you need a lot of precision, for no reason. An easy fix would be to expand the actual clickbox further, not only around the (oversized) close button circle, but to the edge of the screen. This would make Thunderbird, Firefox, etc. closable likel any other normal app. ;D If you support this, leave a like on the issue. And lets hope this doesnt get closed because of whatever...

Longtime Fedora Silverblue user here, who recently jumped over to Kinoite (Atomic KDE). I typically enable autologin on my display managers because I use whole disk encryption and already need to enter my passphrase to decrypt and start the OS. I discovered pretty quickly that SDDM's autologin feature isn't working under Fedora 40. LightDM also failed to start under Wayland on F40, regardless of which greeter I tried. Long story short, I opted to use GDM since I knew its automatic login feature worked fine under Wayland. It's worth noting that KDE has it's own lockscreen mechanism, so you won't even see GDM unless you manually logout of your session. To try this yourself: 1. Install GDM: `rpm-ostree install --apply-live gdm` 2. Disable SDDM: `sudo systemctl disable sddm` 3. Enable GDM: `sudo systemctl enable gdm` 4. Reboot and select the Plasma session before logging in; this is required only once in order to establish to the default, otherwise GDM will load a broken GNOME session when autologin is enabled 5. Edit `/etc/gdm/custom.conf` and add the following under `[daemon]` (replacing `username` with your own): AutomaticLoginEnable = true AutomaticLogin = username Voila! You will no longer need to enter your user credentials before loading the desktop.

I'm running Inkscape as flatpak on Kubuntu 24.04 and I wanted to install.the Ink/Stitch extension, but somehow this doesn't seem to work like it did on the apt/ppa version. I've tried the script install from inkstitch, and I've tried to manually copy the contents of the tar.xz to the extensions subfolder in home/.var/<inkscape> and restarting inkscape, but no luck so far. I was hoping someone here could give me some helpful tips to try? thanks!

So I installed pop on my laptop a few months ago, and recently got another one where I installed arch. On both laptops I mostly just watched series, and often times I'd just leave the laptop with the media player still open. Now to the issue: Randomly throughout the day, it would just start playing whatever I left open, usually after a few hours of being left alone. Now that I think about it, I think it was only crunchyroll. Does anyone experience anything similar, or might even have an idea as to how to fix this or what causes this? Is it just crunchyroll being buggy?

I used to hate android emulators, since the ones I'd tested on Windows were ad-ridden, slow bloatware. The other day I needed to run an android app on Fedora 40. I tried Waydroid and it worked very well. The app ran supersmooth as if it was running natively. Also the cli syntax was very sane an user friendly. waydroid app install|run|list ... So if you need an Android app on linux the experience might be better than what you think it would be.

macOS Spaces (virtual desktop) allows the user to have multiple desktops PER MONITOR. When a user switches a space, it’s not the entire set of monitors, just the one they are in. Is there a way to do this in Plasma 6, or… even GNOME?

Dangerous opinion, I've recently moved to Fedora after Ubuntu and after customising it on the GNOME desktop, it's literally Ubuntu (But better) in every way except no snaps. Personally as someone who got the ground running using Ubuntu as my 1st Linux distro, fedora is a comfortable transfer and I really like their spins. Sure DNF can be slow but you can fix that and sure redhat can be a little... difficult with their decisions. What do you think of Fedora? So far I enjoy the stability combined with near-arch levels of getting new updates!

I have a lot of old movies, most will barely be 720p. I ripped them off DVDs with MakeMKV and have sometimes 7GB files for 1,5h. I want to convert them to something below 300MB, I often see more modern torrented movies below that size, so this should totally be possible. They will only ever be played with VLC (Windows) or Celluloid/MPV (Linux) with hardware decoding. But what codec to use? h264 and h265 are nonfree, arent they? But Videolan has some free variant of it and Cisco also offers their free version for h264? Never heard of VP8 and VP9. Then there is AV1 but that seems to only have "264K 360° Surround sound 3D VR" options. Man I just want to encode normal movies 🥲 What about webm? That is under "web" but probably also good? I suppose I should use h264 for compatibility, but the web stuff will also be compatible. I would like the best and fanciest algorithms to have least dataloss. Also, what to use for the audio? I think opus is best. Thanks!

Hey y'all So I've been a big anti-Wayland shill around here but decided to finally give it a shot, I installed Debian 12 with GNOME, and can't seem to get Plank working. Without the Plank dock, GNOME is unusable, and KDE refuses to autostart Guake (does not save the setting in autostart), and when it works it seems broken (stuck to the left side of the screen). These are fundamental apps to me for any decent Linux laptop use. What gives? Is there an alternative?

Hello, So I just bought a 7900 XTX and put it in my Libreboot 9020 MT motherboard (I have a custom build that I made for myself), it says during bootup of Debian: "amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: firmware: failed to load amdgpu/gc_11_00_0_mes_2.bin (-2)" I took out the GPU, booted into the OS without errors, and checked if the firmware-amd-graphics package was installed, which it was. I'm new to AMD, wondering if anyone else has had the same issue before.
