Apple and Google use their app stores to shape what apps you can and cannot have on devices, but now more governments—including the U.S. government—are using legal and extralegal tools to lean on these gatekeepers in order to assert that same control. Google’s central registration system will be devastating for the Android developer community. EFF has signed on to F-Droid’s open letter. Secureboot does something or other I don’t understand, but it seems to restrict what you can install on your computer. And I’ve heard stories of BIOS software bricking itself when you turn off secure-boot.
It’s not true, certainly can restrict the installing of certain apps which need admin privilegs, but it’s a malware scan beginning with the boot sector, avoiding root kit malware.
