My theory was that it was so many teenagers traveling a long way to a big tournament who couldn’t afford to just get a hotel room the night before. So they’d sleep at their friends house or whatever, and then just show up in whatever condition.
But having the problem at the local game shop kind of defeats that theory.
Went to PAX, the rest of the convention floor smelled fine. The smell at the tabletop game floor hit hard.
The thing is you can smell yourself. I can smell when I stink. How can you not notice that rancid smell following you is you?
That’s because there’s some times when you don’t stink, so you’ve had time to learn the difference. Some people always stink, and they forget what clean smells like
When my parents bought their house, there were hoarders renting out the lower flat. when they opened the door, it smelled awful. Kids being kids, I just flat out asked one of their kids “Why does your flat stink so much?”. They told me, it does not stink ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. So you can get insensitive about stuff like that.
On another note: my wife can taste stuff I cannot taste. I can see better than other folks while my hearing is really bad. So senses work differently for different humans. So while I can smell myself as well, that does not need to hold true for others.

Pre-pandemic, we had a couple (as in they are together) over for supper. They’ve been friends with my wife for over twenty years now. They’ve always been into board and video games (each has their own gaming rig and every console), and overweight. Something had recently changed because their higiene had been ok so far. At some point in the conversation, it came up that they had done some research and found that IT WASN’T HEALTHY TO SHOWER EVERY DAY. They were now doing it once a week since “they didn’t exercise anyway”. Obviously, they smelled and I made that clear. We didn’t hear from them for some time after that. These were two adults who had jobs and owned a house. Mind you, their house cleaning habits had also deteriorated.

Gamer boys are TERRIBLE at self-care and hygiene.
I’m so curious about this. Why are they like that? I don’t understand how that happens, and what specifically about gaming makes it more prevalent.

Sheeeesh daddy-oof
Glad you turned out good enough for the both of you!

Raggardusch (Swedish, trans. Greaser shower): a shower taken in deodorant spray
That’s a pretty great description for the Axe body spray target demographic. A raged douch, if you will.
In the Netherlands we call it a French shower, I don’t know why. (But i can guess)
I’ve never heard that one before, in my circle we call it a military shower.
I would like to volunteer the 'Hours bath, which is soap and water for face, armpits, and crotch, with a sink or basin and picher.
Hits the B.O. right in the glandulars.
Also just a big fan of washing cracks, feet, and hands after emptying the guts.
French shower
Or French bath, is basically washing your chest and arms and face with only soap and water from the washbasin.
Is it because the French term for shower is “douche”?
This is fresh in my mind because I just took my kids to a game store to buy a gift for someone who wanted Pokemon cards. Big mistake.
Unfortunately I picked the day they had a MTG tournament. We barely got inside when the wall of stench hit us. One of them noticed a guys hairy ass crack hanging out as well. They were very verbal about both and I don’t blame them.
Decided to just go somewhere else because it was unbearable. The whole ride they couldn’t stop talking about how it smelled like unwashed ass, BO, and sour milk.
Uh… I have the ABCC11 gene so I don’t have body odour and don’t wear deodorant. Can I come in?
you have the ABCC11 gene so you can’t smell your body odour. go shower
No, ABCC11 means you have no body odour and dry ear wax. It’s very common in Korea but far less common among Caucasians.
You don’t produce the smell from your own glands, but sweating can still make you smell.
Are you mansplaining the ABCC11 gene to someone with the ABCC11 gene?
I mean, you just said it’s about being a decendant of Genghis so you’re clearly not that knowledgeable about it
Bazinga
(Wash your ass anyways, ya filthy animal, you still get dirty and produce other skin oils even if you’re not quite as smelly)
Point to where I said that I didn’t shower.
Hey, so, can you explain to me how putting deoderant in your pits helps with the oil and dirt on your skin? Too many people think that wearing deoderant is a substitute for showering and that’s truly gross.
I’m sorry, I made an assumption about someone that thinks “doesn’t smell as bad” is the same thing as not smelling at all.
I have it too and I shower because I’m not gross like you.
They said they don’t wear deodorant, not that they avoid showers
They got their feelings hurt because I called out their manspalining. Everything from that point on was a bad faith temper tantrum. Once backed into a corner by their ridiculous arguments they ran away and hid.
I don’t care. If they’re gonna accuse me of mansplaining, I’m gonna assume they don’t shower. I think it’s fair game.
Point to where I said that I didn’t shower.
I don’t want to have to mansplain why I said that. You’re a smart person, go figure it out.
I don’t know about her genes, but I once had a coworker who you could tell didn’t use deodorant, but in a clean, freshly-showered way. I absolutely adored her smell when we got into a situation where she was reaching up very near me. It wasn’t like the nothing or soap smell you get after a shower, but a human smell. It made me feel very content.
That’s what happens when you don’t nuke your pits and privates with soap every day. You develop healthy bacteria colonies that don’t stink, and which compete with the stinky bacteria for resources. Water and friction is enough for daily washing. Soap is for every couple of days. Except for your hands, wash your hands with soap every day.
Yes. There is no sour BO smell. When I’m working hard I smell like wet clothes and wet body. After a long day in the sun I smell musky.
The card “Cleanse” was banned for being “culturally insensitive”…
IIRC, it was Yu-Gi-Oh! players that were infamous for weaponizing their smell to distract their opponents.
My local store just smells like cardboard, ink, and paint, even during the MtG tournaments.
Usually these signs exist for that one depressed dude who no one wants to say anything directly to but desperately needs someone to tell them it’s a problem.
I love the feeling of being showered, wearing deodorant, cologne, and putting on freshly washed clothes. Along with having fresh breath after brushing my teeth.
It’s just so much more pleasant for everyone. Smell good, look good, feel good. It does wonders for your confidence.
And if you’re sweating in the shower, take a colder shower.
a magic the gathering store…that requires basic hygiene before coming in? that shit gonna be empty
24? who gets smelly after a day?
Almost everyone. Especially those who don’t think they do. Ah hem.
Yous be surprised.
And this is clearly on a door to a card shop. Magic tournaments are infamous for individuals that have terrible hygiene.
FYI - you do not need to shower daily.
Although you can never admit this publically, as it has become the social expectation. But feel free to move to an alternate day shower routine if you haven’t had a sweaty day. I guarantee no one will notice. Your skin will be less dried out. You’ll save a not-insignificant-amount in water and energy and time.
Body odour comes from not showering for very many days, and more so from wearing unwashed smelly clothes.
You don’t need to shower daily. You absolutely do need to wash yourself in some other way, like with a washcloth. Unless you have no BO at all, more likely than not that bacteria colony under the armpits will make you smell bad regardless of if you had a “sweaty day” or not. Plus, wearing clean clothes helps a lot.
Anecdotally, I went to a gaming convention once and that taught me to never do it again. The smell was so bad. Living the stereotype. And on a recent concert I had someone stink so bad in front of me, it ruined the experience.
Also, as a side note. The article giving an example about why someone doesn’t shower being not liking having wet hair. I’ve heard this once. Do people not know they can just… tie their hair in a bun if it’s longer or just avoid wetting it if it’s short?
If your hair needs to be treated with a straightener or something, the humidity will mess it up. This is exactly why I cut off all my hair even though I love long hair, so I understand the complaint completely.
Whether or not you need to shower daily comes down to personal body chemistry and activity though. I have to shower one or twice a day since going on testosterone, but I could get away with every third day prior to that. The difference in smell is so staggering. I have to wash my face multiple times throughout the day now as well, but I’ve got fully make-up’d coworkers who are fine all day. It’s just that our bodies are different.
I don’t mean to complain about the sign’s wording though; I think it’s meant to give hygienic advice rather than actually police what products everyone is using and how often.
you might not need to but i do. my musk is potent.

Pits, crotch, and feet. Only other stuff if it gets really dirty. Rinsing off sweat is enough. I wash my hair every 2-3 days. Nobody’s complained , even my wife. In fact, she’s pretty similar and it’s fine to me.
Oh great, more health advice from unqualified randos online.
Not everyone’s bodies have the same needs and people should be cautious about blindly following whatever advice someone confidently suggests. If you want to shower less, please talk to a doctor/dermatologist first.
My sensitive skin has a maybe 36 hour limit without washing before it gets distractingly itchy. There’s no way this advice could work for everyone.
Just be careful out there, people.
There was no need to get confrontational.
If you are itchy, shower, no one forbade you. Just, it’s not needed by the vast majority of people. It is but a social norm.
It is also detrimental to shower everyday with soaps. It’s a shame how saying “Ask your doctor before taking health advice you find online” is considered controversial now.
That might be necessary if you have sensitive skin but I’d never dream of asking my doctor for permission to try out showering less than once a day
Pretty sure you should be paying attention to the spirit of the rule, not the letter.
Everyone, trust

How’d you get smelly mate? Either your home’s in need of a cleaning or your skin clogs easily (like the other guy said). Most folks I know usually take a shower once every 2 days or if they workout, so really shocked by how everyone’s responding here.
Try living in the equator, mate.
that would do it yeah
To back Dave up here, you don’t need to shower every day as long as you keep your follicles clean. All of your folloclees

By the end of the second day, I feel the grease in my hair. I can “get away with” the second day, assuming I’m not at work or something. But do that regularly? People notice, even when they don’t say it.
Anyone living where the temperature goes over 27ºC (81F)
I have a friend who has to shower twice a day because she has severe hyperhidrosis, a condition that causes excessive sweating
i need something like this for people who have smoked in the last 12 hours. everywhere.
Love Lemmy going full nerdstank in the comments.
Don’t take life advice from Redditor types example #353257774
The bathroom in my LGS literally has free deodorant openly available for use, and the owner reminds everyone whenever the store is really packed for an event. Unfortunately some people still do not get the hint.
I put deodorant on but you can’t force me to shower!!
Baths are just more fun.
This. I have total greaseballs tell me im unhygienic if i share that I don’t shower despite bathing daily
“Your just sitting in your own filth” motherfucker you clearlyhave not showered in 3 days.
i was already sitting in my own filth. now i’m bathing in it. try to keep up Jan you have no style
Attend a LEGO convention every year and they always post a reminder as it gets closer to bathe and wear deodorant.
I really want to go down to one of the local spots and play, but I’m kind of terrified of what I’ll find there.
Probably this
That’s what’s gonna happen all right when I come in and sweep the floor (jk I am a noob).
It’s usually a mixed bag. I tend to play with the same group semi monthly that understands none of us are trying to go win a tournament, and when I can’t play with them I bring out the group hug/slug decks and just watch the combo folks do their thing.
Why deodorant if you have showered?
ಠ_ಠ
Please tell me this is sarcasm
I’d argue this depends climate, body type, and also just how smelly/sweaty you are due to genetics, diet, etc…
Some people absolutely need every bit of help they can get, others just need to wash the schmlooze off in the morning.
I say that as someone who wears deodorant religiously. Before I was on E, especially before I lost some weight, and ESPECIALLY when my job was more physical, yeah required.
I could probably get away with not using it nowadays, but I like using a milder organic one instead.
Or extremely French.
