Hi, since I’ve started using Lemmy, I’ve been running into the same people and having something approaching a relationship with them–even if it’s mostly imaginary.
It got me to wondering if there’s a community or form of community available on the internet that I haven’t tried yet that might actually lead to something approaching having friends.
So far Discord has been extremely meh; but I’ve heard of Mastodon and Peertube and Matrix and all kinds of weird stuff that is outside the mainstream.
Anyone have better success with different protocols?
I’ve always preferred forums over chat, but that’s me.
Persistent chat media like XMPP and Matrix are a decent middle ground, but I too, generally prefer the organization of topics of forums.
and don’t forget internet relay chat
Irc is not persistent without modification.
So? I still think it’s a lot nicer than matrix.
and it can easily be made persistent but I prefer xmpp for that.
xmpp is the best, I just don’t like the chatrooms as much as irc.
Please don’t be pedantic. Communicating isn’t always about persistence.
Yup, basic IRC (on which I spent many hours in the late 90s) does not persist. Either you’re online to get the message, or you don’t get it.
Me, too. The problem with forums is usually they get really big and you don’t bother remember who people are unless they piss you off. That’s what’s different about Lemmy. I actually know and look forward to reading 2 people and only dread one so far. On reddit, I never knew who I was talking to unless it was a very niche sub.
I make liberal use of blocking, even on Lemmy. Life is too short to dread seeing a user
