I don’t have anything great to say about this matter, but I have the hiccups… Holy fuck the hiccups!
As someone who gets the hiccups 10-20x a day every day for the last 16 years, fuck hiccups
How do you endure? I don’t know if I could do that…
You must be exceedingly strong with a fortitude to rival mountains.
It is what it is. I have permanent nerve damage and randomly get bouts of hiccups throughout the day. Sometimes it will be just 2 or 3, sometimes it lasts for a long time. It’s annoying to say the least. But otherwise harmless. They’re the least of my issues so I try to pay them no mind, but they can of course be obtrusive.
Im able to stop hiccups like when i get them i can just turn them off but i dont wanna be left out so FUCK HICCUPS!!
water stops mine, but some people can have it pathologically.
A friend of mine told a story about his brother who had a major surgery in his abdomen and HAD to control his chronic hiccups while in recovery or risk opening his wounds or worse. His doctors helped. I don’t even remember all the remedies he mentioned because there were several and the point was that each person can be different so you have to figure out what works for you.
Omfg… chronic hiccups…
Not nonstop or anything - he just got them often.
I have found a method that works 100% of the time for me. It sounds silly but bear with me. After the hiccup starts, I tell myself “hiccups arent real” or some equivalent phrase, in my inner voice, as convincingly as possible. Like I actually believe it. It stops immediately, before the second hiccup.
I am spreading this method among friends and family, I would say around a third of them report successes, but Im pretty sure not all of them have tried it seriously and some brush it off as bs.
“Its the hiccup illuminati”
Ok next time i have them i will do that.
Please try and report back, Im always curious if it works for others.
Hiccups are involuntary muscle spasms. Applying heat can help stop muscle spasms no matter where they’re occuring. Drinking large gulps of very warm water (as warm as possible) has stopped hiccups for me 100% of the time.
Oh wow!
Holding my breath works for me, or maybe it just passes the time. Usually goes away in about 2 full breaths.
Yeah. Oxygen deprivation releases the reflex, but you have to hold your breath, so long that it hurts.
There have actually been studies why that is.
Why is that?
One of the definitive conditions for ceasing hiccups is CO2 retention in the body, the target of which is around 60 mmHg of CO2 in venous blood. The fight-or-flight response induced by acute hypercapnia can effectively suppress hiccups because their original nature is highly likely to be aberrations in the swallowing reflex, which is associated with the parasympathetic nervous system.

Hiccups are actually caused by a microorganism called “hickey” getting into your lungs. When you hold your breath, you flood the organism with carbon dioxide, which kills enough of it that your immune system can handle the rest easily. If you want to read up more about it, Google search “how to remove chest hickeys”
Thanks I will teach this to my kids too
Doing a whip it cures hiccups
BOO!
Still got the hiccups?
Ahh!
Yes but I have a fear boner too.
Breathe shallow but slow, relax. Hickup is a cramp in the diaphragm, mostly caused through stress.
I can confirm this works. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve stopped hiccups doing this. Best if it’s done right away when the episode starts.
Ever get hiccups together with acid reflux? That’s an extra special level of hell.
Holy fuck I cant imagine.
My remedy was almost always a teaspoon of mustard.
Drinking from the far side of a glass has never not stopped my hiccups
Drinking from the far side of the glass has always stopped my hiccups.
I don’t understand what that means. How do you drink from the far side of a glass?
You lean over top of the glass, and use your lower lip to control the flow, and swallow in this position
It sounds (and presumably looks) stupid but this is the only method that actually works for me.
My wife gets bad hiccups sometimes. I meanwhile can just control my diaphragm and stop hiccuping on command. She doesn’t seem to find that very fair.
Same with my wife… But I just remind her that she is not a fish and she thinks about it for a second and she stops hiccuping.
Hold your breath count to 10 in your head if you hiccup start again until you get to 10
Hiccups suck so bad, people will try all manner of crazy witchcraft to get rid of them.
