I know how to add a picture but I was hoping there was a way to add a gif.

I did that in Jerboa, and can see it and other GIFs by clicking the thumbnail.

That URL there is not the GIF file itself. That URL points to a web page that displays the file when you visit the page in a web browser. But to embed an image in a Lemmy comment, you need to refrerence the actual image file itself.
Notice that the end of the URL below actually is
.gif. That is a URL to the actual GIF file itself, not a URL to a web page.This is the most direct link I could find to that GIF, which just looks big and unwieldy, but does seem to display here alright:

GIFs are no different. It’s a very size-intensive format, though, and Lemmy will reject files over a certain size.

Yeah, exactly the same way to add a picture.
It just seems to be slightly buggy, need to try multiple times with pictures/gifs that have been on the device for longer time. No issues with pictures that i just downloaded.
I can’t ever seem to get it to work 🤷♂️

How are you trying to do it? Are you using an “insert image” button or something in Lemmy, or are you manually typing out
or whatever in the text box?
Works even with giphy, in my experience (browser only)
You need to host the gif on another site like pixelfed, I think. Or imgur. Something like that.and use the input link icon when posting the comment.
Worth noting that Imgur links look like this in the UK (possibly elsewhere too?) They work if you use a VPN though.
catbox.moe works too. Although files uploaded anonymously that have not had a download/hit in over 2 years will be removed from Catbox.. which is weird that was not the default since the beginning considering they’re not like other image hosting sites size and funding.

Huh, I don’t know where to find the metadata like you did, @WhoIz. This one was for sure a .gif file.
I see a static frame of the gif in the comment and then click on it to fill screen and see the gif do it’s gif thing. *Still on Voyager client
