Two US lawmakers push tighter curbs on chipmakers from the Middle Kingdom
that sounds obviously bad, so naturally its the thing i most expect to happen now.
More RAM for the rest of the world!
Just another way the Trump administration will be making America much less competitive worldwide.
Should lower US prices too I’d imagine. If the Chinese RAM is cheaper then demand drops for US RAM globally.
Only in the US
Making it even cheaper for the rest of the world!
All this winning for the people in the US of A…
…are they tired of it already?Chinese RAM production is mostly going to end up in Chinese AI datacenters, as per government mandate.
In 2025, [Chinese] authorities introduced requirements that data centers obtain at least 50% of their chips from domestic manufacturers - and by November that year, state-funded projects reportedly faced additional restrictions that excluded foreign accelerators from facilities still under construction.
There is not going to be a Chinese RAMPocalypse relief either way.
It’s still increasing the supply no matter what, doesn’t matter who’s buying from where. The Chinese datacenters don’t exist in a vacuum right now, they’re depleting the supply for the rest of us.
And the eased demand for legacy brands abroad would still put downward pressure on prices in the US.
“The global memory shortage will likely require a whole-of-government approach to solve. The answer to high memory prices is not dependence on subsidized Chinese chips but expanded manufacturing capacity, which will lower costs for US companies and consumers for decades rather than months"
If only there were a simple alternative to either scenario. It’s not like lawmakers could go after the AI bros who’s reservations of years worth of memory manufacturing is the sole reason for the shortage. That would be socialist /s.
Or the RAM manufacturers themselves who have formed a cartel and are deliberately doing this.
unfortunately, a whole-government approach to build out productive capacity is also socialism somehow.
looks like the only option left is to do nothing.
Would be nice if post titles could be less US-centric?
That’s the point. Those AI companies that already bought 5 years worth of RAM production don’t want to see their investment devalued by an increase in supply.
The rest of the world will have access to cheap Chinese RAM, so the AI companies investment will still be devalued.
Lol Congress really just turned over management to the AI Bros huh.
It’s not that easy, China factory can’t pump out ram fast just because someone allowed it. They are physical limitations and technical risks to consider.
In a world that relies on logic, we have this.
