    I’d only consider using game pass if games wouldn’t rotate out of it. I want to replay stuff. Even worse, I don’t want to lose access mid-playthrough.

      Think a lot of that is out of Microsoft’s hands. Sort of like the way Netflix went. Other companies began pulling their stuff off the service and Microsoft/Netflix has no choice in the matter.

      I say this because I’ve been playing older games like Fable II and Fable III without any issues over GamePass for years. But those titles are effectively controlled by Microsoft, so they can keep it or take it off whenever they please.

      Hopefully we don’t end up with a situation like Netflix where all these other publishers create their own streaming services alongside GamePass because I will not subscribe to 50 different services. I don’t for television, as it is. Thankfully EA’s is included in GamePass because I wouldn’t have it on its own without it.

      I’d “rent” the fame and if I really liked it and forsee myself playing for a long time, I’d buy it and download it and that avoids the inevitable game rotation

      Understandable. Xbox pays developers to have their games on GP and most games are on a timed contract. Xbox owned games are the exception. There are also a few games on gamepass that have been there for what feels like always, Slay the Spire, Monster Train, Monster Sanctuary, and many of the RyuGaGotoku games were on there, had the contract time out, then MSoft and RGG brought them back to Gamepass

    Lol how about bringing Game Pass to Macs, iPads, the Deck and so on. You know, before hell freezes over. The difference being that Valve and Apple might actually welcome it. I really don’t see Sony and Nintendo ever agreeing to it. 😂

      Iirc the reason why its not on iOS is because apple mandates each cloud title be a seperate entry in the store and not a hub to select a game. Its the same reason why geforce now requires you to use it over safrai browser and cannot be in the store.

      The thing stopping them from putting it on iOS devices was probably the fact that Apple would take a chunk off the top through App store fees. EU just ruled that they can fuck themselves and alternative storefronts must be made available on the platform.

        From memory Apple rejected game pass on iOS because they wanted Microsoft to submit every game (even though they’re all streamed) as separate apps on the App Store to comply with the age rating systems.

        EU just ruled that they can fuck themselves and alternative storefronts must be made available on the platform.

        No, they didn’t. For now the only thing the EU ruled is that Apple is one of six(?) digital gatekeepers. No consequences for now. Some consequence will come but it’s not a straight ruling to allow competing app stores as you claimed.

      Valve can’t really stop it. The Deck’s just linux under the hood. That’s a big part of why I bought it.

      But the way people have to bend over backwards to get Game Pass running on it kinda sucks. I’m a sub, and when I open the Deck I’m already dreading how much of a headache it’ll be.

        Wait, it actually works? I thought the UWP base was a non-starter.

        I’d maybe consider subbing every so often if it supported Linux. I’d more seriously consider it if it supported Steam Deck with a decent UI. But I’m not going to bend over backwards for a service I’m paying monthly for, that’s just silly.

          Streaming “works”. As well as streaming does, which is mediocre.

          You can’t locally run gamepass games unless you install windows on the deck.

          Unlike him, however, I’ve had a fair bit of luck streaming (on my computer. The Deck is my Christmas present from my wife). Starfield of all games. Good framerate, usually low controller-latency. That streaming thing is finally starting to improve. Finally.

      I mean, they did put up an official guide on how to use their cloud gaming on the Deck. But it would sure be nice if they enabled a way to play the games locally.

      I always heard that consoles were sold at a loss and made up for with services. Sounds like the logical continuation of this saga is for MS to give up the hardware game so long as Gamepass generates more income due to being on virtually every platform.

        That’s what Microsoft want to make people believe: “Poor Microsoft only selling proprietary platforms because those evil competitors would not let them onto their platform. Sony basically forced Microsoft to buy Activision Blizzard, commit only future Call of Duty to come to PlayStation at all, and reserving future installments of all other franchises to come out exclusively on Xbox and Windows. Microsoft really wants to release Diablo 5, Overwatch 3, etc. on PlayStation but because GamePass isn’t available, their hands are tied.”

        Just look at Steam and Steam Deck: Steam allows subscription services. EA Play is available through Steam. On Steam Deck there is even the entirely vendor-neutral Flathub platform available through the pre-installed Discover store. Microsoft could release GamePass through there and even bundle a Proton-like compatibility layer based on actual Windows code. Microsoft doesn’t do that because GamePass is meant to tie people into Microsoft platforms.

          If that were true, Microsoft would sell such a thing already. GamePass Streaming is just meant as a sneak peek of the games experience. The real deal with better input latency will be Xbox and Windows for the foreseeable future.

            I just looked and they actually scrapped it, they were working on one. Perhaps they wanted to just target existing devices in the end, although that hasn’t seemed to have gone anywhere either, with game pass only being available on some samsung tvs.

            It’s what Google wanted to do with Stadia.

            Fire Sticks can already Bluetooth connect to controllers and I have Moonlight installed on mine so I can stream games from my desktop to my TV downstairs. It’s not even that intensive on hardware.

      I don’t think the hardware is the issue. Having their service on PlayStation isn’t going to sell anyone an XBox.

      I think third party games is the issue for Sony. They let EA do their own games in a subscription. They don’t have the more expensive full version that includes third party games (though it could be their cut being EA not wanting to sell it instead).

      For Nintendo, regardless of ideology (where they probably object just to object), I think if they started work right now, we’d see their store being capable of gamepass in a decade or so.

        Sure it would. If PlayStation got only fewer games and/or less optimized versions of those games, it would be nothing but promoting a closed competing platform that would never allow PlayStation Plus onto its platform.

        Sony is basically doing something similar with their Windows ports of PlayStation games. The ports of God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn were released under a year before the originally planned release dates of the sequels.

            No, they are pretty great, actually. The PC port of Zero Dawn was in all likelihood in development before Covid and then the pandemic came and Sony realized that not only are the ports a great way to promote the franchise, they also are a relatively cheap way to earn some coin in a Covid-stricken world. I think it’s absolutely worthwhile to Sony to make those games but we cannot expect simultaneous releases with PlayStation either. They are PlayStation promotion first.

            Side note: Despite some noticeable delay, Sony releases more and more current games on Windows than Microsoft does on PlayStation and Switch which only get remasters of 1990s games.

    It’s bad enough I’m already paying for PlayStation Plus, but it least it provides a shitload of free games. Why would I pay for that and Microsoft Game Pass.

      I have it on PC. There are a lot of games on it, but only about 10 I really want to play. I have PS+ highest tier and I feel the same way.

      I think these services are like cable: 120+ channels, 5 thinks worth watching.

        I’ve found that PS+ is good for stuff that I’m kinda curious about, but not so curious that I’d pay for it. Sometimes I find something cool. For example, Returnal isn’t bad for a PS5 launch title. But I wasn’t going to pay retail for it.

        What annoys me is that even though I pay a monthly subscription for Final Fantasy XIV, I can’t actually play it without also paying the PS+ tax. But that’s what I get for not playing it on Windows (because I only put up with Windows when I’m getting paid).

        What I would like to see is mandatory demos for all games. If your game doesn’t provide a playable demo of some kind, it won’t be listed in the online store. No exceptions, no excuses.

          FFXIV runs well on Linux with the equivalent hardware you would have used for Windows. Maybe less, actually.

          Only thing that doesn’t work, which you wouldn’t have used on console would be a shader mod, but that’s splitting hairs.

          I’ve run FFXIV on Arch (EndeavorOS) and Fedora (Silverblue) and they both perform on par or better than running the game on Windows.

          Proton has done wonders. It’s legitimately incredible, the explosive growth of Linux gaming through Valve’s work.

            Not disputing that, but there’s no way I’m getting FFXIV to run on a Thinkpad T60 running Slackware. But it’s still enough computer for Firefox and GNU Emacs.

              Yeah I have a T480S and it barely runs WoW Classic. I’ll sometimes do light games the iGPU is capable of. Most of the time I use my desktop to run games, and if I want to play it on this machine, I’ll use Moonlight and Sunshine to stream over to it from the desktop. That machine is a 3090 paired with a 12700KF though. It runs whatever I want it to.

              I don’t have off-LAN game streaming working entirely just yet, but with ZeroTier you can theoretically run everything remotely - my upload speed is probably the limiting factor there, but the internet works well enough otherwise for Plex streaming off-LAN.

              A Deck would probably run FFXIV pretty well, and with the form factor of a controller that you’re used to playing with.

          I like this idea. I know some games let you play for 60 minutes. All games should have a timer. Once it is up, game ends. If you like it, buy it and continue on.

            That’s fair, but maybe make it a 60-120 minutes depending on the game. I’d be seriously annoyed if I wasn’t already familiar with Hideo Kojima’s bullshit, grabbed a 60-minute trial of whatever he ends up doing after Death Stranding, and the entire trial is spent sitting through cutscenes.

            As it was, I spent at least a third of the 60-minute trial for Soul Hackers sitting through cutscenes and reading exposition.

              Ideally, they would just release a demo mode that cuts to the action so you get a feel for the mechanics, or just have a prologue for each game where you taste the action in the first 20-30 min before all of the exposition.

    How is this current news? This has been the strategy for the last 3 years with Gamepass. Who cares about consoles and exclusives when you just provide a rental service across-the-board.

    Their strategy is to curate a good rental library and just deploy it everywhere there’s a screen and internet connectivity.

    Right now the block on mobile which the EU just obliterated was store exclusivity taking a percentage, but even Apple will have to allow other storefronts on their devices.
