Here’s what I’ve already watched:

  • AKIRA (all four)

  • Cyber City Oedo 808 (all four)

  • Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (short, cyberpunk, hyperviolent)

  • Genocyber (all four)

  • Kite (short, 80s-90s, hyperviolent)

  • Soukihei M.D Geist (short, 80s-90s, hyperviolent)

Manga suggestions are also welcome, as I’m currently reading the original GitS.

GITS stand alone complex was produced much later, but you will probably still enjoy it.

    Bubblegum Crisis

    AD Police

Project A-ko is a comedy movie that sort of falls in there. Not as much cyber punk. Neo Tokyo is just an aside.

Roujin Z - movie. They have hospice in the future, right?

How FAR in the future? Have you watched Trigun? It’s a cyber western. It’s a tragedy disguised as a comedy. Gore is low, and there are less deaths than episodes, but there is plenty of action.

Elfen lied was released in 04, but it still has the 90s animation style. It is overtly violent and disturbing. The setting is pre-cyber revolution, where the government appears to quietly control everything. The tech is in there, but not heavily featured.

Sorry if my list isn’t 100% what you were looking for, but I think you might enjoy some of these if you haven’t had the chance.

Bubblegum Crisis, Bubblegum Crash, Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor 1 and 2, Armitage III, AD Police Files, Memories, Neo Tokyo, Megazone 23, Venus Wars, Techno Police 21C, AI City, Dominion Tank Police.

Most of these are movies or very short series (like 4 episodes max).

there’s also a hell of a lot more. 80s/90s anime was peak ultraviolent cyberpunk. And if you don’t mind stepping out of the 90s and maybe watching something a bit longer I highly suggest Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and S.A.C. 2nd Gig. by far my favourite anime series of all time. Also Psycho-Pass.

      +1 for Psycho Pass.

      One of my favorites.

Just…watch season 1, movie and Sinners of the System, Providence and walk away. Don’t bother with season 2 and 3 and remember the good memory you had enjoying season 1

Edit: the Mandatory Happiness VN game is fine too

BLAME! by Tsutomu Nihei. I wouldn’t bother with any animated versions.

Wow. Kite? That’s a difficult one to beat. My spouse is more up with this but Chainsaw Man for modern violent. I’ll ask for more.
