Apologies if this sounds silly but i was wondering if openshot or shotcut are good video editors especially for someone starting out on video editing for the first time, the type of videos i might plan on making is either general gaming videos or YTPs (hopefully y’all know what that is).

I have also considered kdenlive and davinci resolve aswell (i will not discuss davinci since that ain’t open source).

Out of curiosity, i was also wondering y’alls thoughts on shotcut or openshot (and probably kdenlive).

I’ll be waiting for responses, Thanks!

When I tried them a few years ago in Windows for cutting videos none for my bed. The worst was not even working or crashed. I wrote my own clip cutter.

Shotcut is great, lots of options and capable of doing nearly anything you want. I found OpenShot to be so simplified that it was difficult to use.

I’ve used OpenShot and Kdenlive happily many times. I feel like they are straightforward to use, especially for basic editing.

My old PC seemed to only be able to handle shotcut it didn’t have everything i wanted, but it had all the basic stuff you could need.

I think if you were going to really be getting into the weeds of video editing, you might want something better. I personally wasn’t able to find ways to speed up certain editing functionality, which took up some extra time. Certain features are still being developed and worked on.

But at the time, I just needed a lightweight editor that my PC could handle, and it did the job well.

I followed this tutorial, and it helped me learn the ropes.

I’ve decided that I want to learn DaVinci at some point, but I’ve been frankly lazy in recent months and haven’t been editing as much as I would like/should lol

I’ve used Shotcut and Kdenlive. The former felt pretty limited, but okay enough. Kdenlive felt a lot more developed while still working perfectly well. I should note though that I don’t edit very much at all, so I’ve little knowledge on how either program works for anything that isn’t a simple, short one-off thing.

I used shotcut for light video editing and it worked great, no complaints

Haven‘t used openshot or shotcut but I have tried kdenlive and I found it to be perfectly adequate with a fairly nice and user friendly interface. What makes you unsure about it?

I remember someone said they had an issue where kdenlive crashed for them or something like that and it made me think kdenlive is prone to crashes so that was why i was unsure.

Now that i think about it, i wonder if it was just a problem occurring to them for some reason.

      (Edited the post aswell too.)

I would recommend to try them out. This is the best method to know how well it works on your hardware and environment, and if you like it. All should be available and easy to install, besides Davinci, where a special dance and some weird setups are required and not all hardware work well. At least that’s what I am told from YouTubers. They love Davinci, but it can be problematic in Linux and its not even Open Source.

Kdenlive is pretty good. According to those users its not at the professional and quality level of Davinci, but for a hobby user it should be enough. And it improved a lot in the last couple years and is no longer a crash fest. Openshot is simple program. I used it many years before, it was crashy, but looks like from reports it works well and is quite simple. Shotcut is also beloved, but I never used it. Looks like something in between of Openshot and Kdenlive.

Also depending on the desktop environment, something like Kdenlive could pull ton of dependencies if you don’t have KDE already. I would test them through Flatpak.

Oh! KDE is mentioned in this comment, i actually do use KDE! I use EndeavourOS (i don’t want to install arch the manual way or use archinstall… btw) with KDE Plasma and it’s one of the best desktop environments i ever used… i still like cinnamon which is the first desktop environment i used but after i tried out Plasma, i never went back. i might try Kdenlive first because of the fact that i do use KDE Plasma.

I might still test out both shotcut and openshot to decide which one i like more if that makes sense, thank you for your reply!

Shotcut does everything I need and tends to “just work”, better than most others. I think I tried OpenShot once or twice and it didn’t work so well, but don’t remember details.

I am a Kdenlive lover. It works great. Has plenty of options and even a “community store” of effects, render configs, etc, but for your case you won’t even need to go that far.

A community store…? I didn’t know something like that existed for kdenlive, i kind of want to check it out just out of curiosity.

I use Shotcut. I only use basic features like cutting and stitching, but it’s never let me down.

Haven’t used shotcut or openshot but can recommend kdenlive, it has alot of features but I find it a bit clunky sometimes to work with.

For me when I was working on a large project it crashed once and the autorecover worked, although I still manually save since I’m paranoid.
