I received messages about an account that wasn’t mine, to an email address that wasn’t even the one I used back when I still had Discord.
It seems to be them, their address is correct, and is properly signed as far as I can tell.
What is even going on here. Come on, Discord.
I would assume this is a phishing scam
it’s genuine, was sent by Discord.
Does that even have to mean anything nowadays?
Probably. The links in those messages are Discords domain plus alphabet soup, so who knows, they’re terrible with user data.
Never click a link in a email!
(Maybe those click to verify links sent as 2factor when you click the button, but never a unsolicited email)
No no, I didn’t click, just hovered over them to see what they were
I got this too.
I have a Discord account. But I was never able to use it because they demanded that I enter a phone number. Can’t do that, I dont have a phone number for security reasons.
They don’t let you use an account without a phone number anymore? Oh wow
Lots of social medias require a phone number nowadays. If you don’t add a phone number, at best they annoy you everyday to “secure your account”, at worst you can’t even login.
It sucks.
I remember Discord pestering me about it every now and then, but I could still use it without one.
As if that service needed to get any worse
You can, but I don’t know how/when they ask for it. When I changed my email on my main a couple months ago they asked for a number. When I changed the email of an alt recently they didn’t, which was weird.
Either way, I’m glad I don’t use it anymore. So much unnecessary data collection
And you can’t delete it without a phone number
deleted by creator
Same here. Probably happened to a lot of people.
And then they have the audacity to mention GDPR compliance in their FAQ. Absolutely fucking nothing they do has anything to do with GDPR compliance.
FYI, that first screenshot is probably sufficient to make out your name, in case that’s your actual name
Could’ve done that a bit better, that’s true. It’s not even my own name, which is why I painted over it in the first place
I don’t think discord requires email verification
Similar thing happened to my sister. She got an email from a one of the biggest online shopping websites here where she doesn’t have an account. Someone created an account with her email, she got a buying confirmation mail. Then we used forgot password link and login to that account. We can see everything, their address credit card number phone number etc.
She called them and learned that they have the same email address but on hotmail. Stupid people. Stupid online shopping website.
since you haven’t used it in a while, perhaps it was hacked and the email changed without your knowledge. I had some of my accounts hacked a while ago when my phone was compromised and unless you stay on top of that stuff they can delete the notification email quick. discord especially is not only horrible for privacy but a haven for hackers and generally shady people
The name they addressed this to is not what mine ever was, and I requested deletion for my actual account over two years ago. Got the confirmation shortly after, so I’d hope my account is actually gone.
Well, as gone as it can be, with Discord probably keeping everything anyway.
Maybe someone typed the wrong email address
Discord was (is?) rather aggressive about setting up new accounts. You could have clicked an invite link two years ago and it associated with your email and generated an account.
The one account I had, I made on my own accord, no invites or anything. Didn’t even know invites were a thing
Yeah it If you see a link like https://discord.gg/abcdefg123456 it is likely an invite to someone’s server. I don’t see how that could get your email address though.
I received the same two messages but with an alt account that was actually mine and haven’t used in like 2 years. Strange…
I am just trying to make sure I understand that the average Lemmy user doesn’t believe in unsubscribing and blocking an email and instead would rather just bitch about how they are getting emails from a source they could block just so they can talk about privacy and intrusive companies. However those same users who have the privacy experience and “knowledge” have the same issues from the sounds of it.
Ah yes, let me unsubscribe from something that has nothing to do with a subscription
Of course I’ll block their address now, but that doesn’t mean I can’t post about it, maybe raise awareness about something that might happen at the moment.
Turns out I’m not the only one who got emails like this.
Dude it’s a fucking email but a phishing scam.
Do people really not have anything better to do then raise awareness about an email.
Nope it’s not a phishing email indeed I have received this 2 email in my email account where I have a discord account.
Do people not have anything better to do than comment on posts they have nothing to add to? Oh wait…
Who shat in your breakfast? Seriously, who?
