If you don’t bust monopolies then capitalism begins to rapidly break down. We’ve known that for a long time and only recently stopped. You lose all the benefits of capitalism without that feature. What we have in America isn’t capitalism really at all anymore. This whole concept that the government has no role in capitalism and free markets will always correct themselves is a myth and we’ve known that since before America. I don’t think it is. For example Vanderbilt is overwhelming “supportive” on campus but they were also forced to hand over medical records of transgendered patients for an “investigation” into insurance fraud by the state. Transgendered people do not have the same rights and others and people who actively hate them for no reason at all are doing everything they can to make their lives miserable. Republicans love this because it energizes their base and drives progressive voters out of their districts.

Putin has maintained power by keeping a grip on the distribution of wealth to the oligarchs. If he starts taking money from them they will cease any support. They are the keys to his rule and if he doesn’t keep them fat and happy they no longer have a reason to continue to support and will turn on him.
