He can’t possibly do it, legally. By announcing it, he earns cred with people who like him and ensures that he couldn’t possibly do it even if it were legal. It’s a win-win for him as now he gets credit, but doesn’t have to do anything.
Nope… I’ll deal with the hole in the neck of the shirt way better than i will deal with the tag. I prefer to use a seam ripper, but I’ve just violently torn out many a tag when I didn’t have an alternative.
Handwriting anything is torture to me. I learned to type 70+ WPM by the time I was 14 and even that can’t keep up in many circumstances.
One of the most harmful things my boss can do is tell me in the morning that they need to talk to me later and not tell me when or why.
I can’t say I’m good at it, but the best advice I can offer is to be genuinely interested in them. If they are telling you that they love classic rock then you need to reply. That reply doesn’t have to be about you in the slightest. Instead, ask them what is about classic rock that they like. Ask them what years and artists they consider to be classic rock. Look for places where you still do or did align with them. You can then segue and say something like, yeah I really do/did love artist ‘x’, too. I’ve also started listening to a lot of (insert genre) because I’ve been looking for more variety than the same 100 classic rock songs I’ve been listening to for the past 50 years.
Of course, in the above dialog, there is no requirement that you ever share your current opinions about classic rock, if they don’t ask. You can always keep asking them questions about them. What artists do they wish they could have seen in their prime? What artists did they use to love/hate, but have changed their view. What do they like about classic rock that they don’t get from other genres. As long as you remain genuinely interested and engaged you can go on forever and they’ll love you for it.

I know ‘the rule’ is to criticize in private and praise in public, but it would be less stressful for me if praise were also kept private.
When someone is like “Hey I just wanted you to know I appreciate what you do around here :)” I have no idea what to do with that.
Yeah… I’m like, “ok… what exactly did I do that mattered”. And, when it turns out that ‘what mattered’ is that I just did my job then it’s like, why doesn’t everyone just do their job? Why is that special and why are they still working here if they don’t do their job?
