Many of these features are required by law in the US for cars that have ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems). The car has to monitor what’s happening and what it’s doing and record some of that in case there’s an accident. It also has to monitor your attentiveness so you don’t “accidentally” drift off to sleep while it’s in control.

Imagine if his son were driving and got into a crash with ADAS enabled and there weren’t any record of whose fault it was, the driver or the car. Ford would be like, “We’ll, I guess we’ll never know. Good luck with medical bills and a lifetime of suffering.”

Sounds like the speed limiter is a setting that can be disabled. As for the other stuff, sharing phone data, that’s pretty disgusting. I would guess what they’re actually after is whether you’re watching the road or playing with your device. Still not okay without explicit consent before you buy the car.

That said, my wife has worn makeup twice in 18 years. I love her for being herself, but I complimented her on how nice she looked those two times her sister did her makeup because I’m not a complete jerk and have some idea of how to be kind when someone has spent an hour trying to look nice. I also attempted to make it clear that I preferred her without makeup, maybe something along the lines of, “I love how naturally beautiful you are.”

As someone who maintained an API, 80% to 90% of my time was discovering that hackers were attempting an exploit, blocking it, adding monitoring, building abuse prevention. After we shut our API off, we could turn services back on, especially free services that we only took away because hackers.

Not to mention the support volume. More than half of our support calls were, “Why did you suspend my account? I’m a poor old grandpa. I want to appeal.” Okay, yep we looked into activity and you sent 50000 requests in less than a minute and that’s all you ever did with this account. Did you know hackers lie and will spend hours getting tech support? You go to school to be an engineer to build cool stuff and instead field bullshit support requests all day from people trying to destroy the thing you want to build so they can maybe make thirty bucks and cost you tens of thousands. It sucked the life out of me and turned me eternally cynical.

I want to make the, “free”, moniker illegal. Advertisers have to pay money for ads and they get that money from us when we buy their products. In addition to having to look at ads, we also have to pay money for the privilege of looking at them. Any ad supported service is objectively not free. No thanks.

There are degrees. If someone’s sharing about their recent stillborn child, it’s probably best not to bring up that one time I was 6 and my cat died and I can really, really sympathize. Anyone who worries about this is probably that person and could spend more time asking questions and less time, “relating”.

The volume of anti-capitalist and pro-China rhetoric on Lemmy is disconcerting. It makes me appreciate how good other platforms are at moderating state generated garbage.

Phew! My electric car made it five years, right to the theoretical break even point with a gas car. What will I do now? Keep driving it? No, I have a better idea. Drive it off of a cliff and go buy a new one. Yep, I love throwing money away for no reason.

Yeah, that’s the real problem. I wish hydrogen helped. Fuel cells and hydrogen are another way to store and release electricity, like batteries. Switching a car from gas to battery is a tricky proposition. Since they require more components to achieve the same result, delivering electricity to an electric motor, fuel cells would compound that problem.

Well. Bought my new electric car. What am I going to do with my old gas one? Trade it in and get money? Nah. Pay to get it scrapped? I’m such a genius.

Guys, cars don’t last forever, but when you own a car that doesn’t burn dead organisms, get ready to almost never change your oil because it doesn’t collect soot and for engines and cars to last much longer because they don’t generate grimy grease and heat and exhaust, all of which are terrible for mechanical parts.

I’m sure most people here don’t remember when power strips and HDMI cables were $40 and coin batteries were like $15 each pre inflation because stores wanted to make money on them. We could only read, listen to, and watch what our local stores decided to stock and most things didn’t have reviews. If we needed a new power adapter for that one device with a special shaped connector, too bad. It’s literally impossible to buy it.

It’s the government that has all the rest of my your money. We have to cut taxes so I you can get more of it from you!

There isn’t any way we could find a million high school students to donate experiments or golden records. What we need is to use government investment to shoot shameless product placement for my other company into space and live stream pictures of it.

I’ve been reading On the Origin of Species and was surprised that even Darwin had noted that species that evolved in segregated environments like New Zealand had less competition, so weren’t as fit. It’s amazing to see how much progress has been made to undo damage done by humans and create environments were species like this can thrive again.
