My heart really goes out to these people who so briefly had a taste of democracy before being suddenly and dramatically subjugated under a junta.

I know this is a joke, but in all seriousness, after the Tohoku earthquake hit, the aftershocks were so nearly-constant that I eventually couldn’t tell if there was one going on without looking at the water in the fish tank.

“So when we were faced with destruction as a nation after Pearl Harbor…"

The US was never faced with destruction during World War II.

I’m from the US but lived in Japan for a while. They have squirrels, but they’re not very common. They went nuts when they would see a squirrel. At least where I was (Tohoku).

Sorry I wasn’t clear. I was proud of the Dutch because of the limited police response.

And I was so proud of the Dutch just yesterday.

Nice to see that at least France is doing what it can to stand up for the right the thing, in both Israel and Ukraine.

I had “the best” seats at a comedy show recently, but I had to pay some $250 each for the privilege.

I’m not much of a fast food eater, but recently I got some while in a hurry to feed two people.

We got two junior bacon cheeseburgers, one regular cheeseburger, and a medium soda (which, by the way, was comically large–no wonder everybody has diabetes). So that is to say, we got three small cheeseburgers and a drink. It was over twenty bucks. We should have just gone to the fish and chips place down the street where we could have gotten two orders for the same price for more, and better quality, food.

I was talking about this with my dad just recently. How he and I would go to big name concerts in our teens for 20 bucks, or, for him, less but similar when adjusted for inflation. Going to concerts was a common pastime for both of our generations. Those same shows are in the hundreds of dollars now.

Janitorial service, cleaning toilets and worse.

I was going to say toilets/indoor plumbing. Necessary for survival? Maybe not. Best convenience ever invented? Probably.

I wouldn’t have survived childhood without glasses in a pre-modern era.

At first, I read this as The Man Who Fell to Earth, and I thought it was such a great choice. Who doesn’t want to see some Bowie cock?

Also, love Cube. A classic.

Bad writing. USFK isn’t defined once before being used as an initialism throughout the article. As one might guess, it stands for United States Forces Korea.

Doubt Korea has too much say on how those forces are used.

I have always thought similarly. If you are aiming for buddhahood–an escape for yourself–then that is selfish. We should all, ideally, aim to be bodhisattva.

Unfortunately, the bar really is pretty low. Even most modern men who would consider themselves to be feminists(/consider woman to be equals) don’t do their fair share of household work, let alone parenting. It’s really ingrained in the culture.

Sounds like men don’t want to write books about it (or otherwise feel disincentivized for doing so), so all you’re seeing are female perspectives.

When I initially became disabled, I tried to keep working desperately. I spent a couple of months working from bed before I had to give up.

Just an anecdote. Most people don’t actually work from bed.

This is simply false. They’re an awful company, but you can just use your browser.

I’m not sure about your response. I didn’t suggest it wasn’t an honest question.

They’re very different, in fact. A fish spatula is almost completely flat, slightly curved, and has a thin, long, slotted metal body. It’s fantastic for picking up delicate or stuck-on foods, not just fish.
