  • I host my own mail, imap and authorative dns servers for my domains for more than 25 years now. I like it and seldom had any problems. I have two root servers in two different countries for that. Costs around 2x50€/month, but the load from said services is minimal. The servers also host gitlab, nextcloud and other services, most of them only available via vpn (eg. No public ssh). Every service runs encapsulated in it’s own vm with strict firewall rules and their own internal network. This makes migrating to another server relatively smooth.

I would recommend if you know what you’re doing and have fun doing it. Keeping services up to date takes sometimes a little time, mostly when there is a distribution update with configuration changes.

I do not know what “Experienced enough in homelabbing” means, but running mail and dns is not homelabbing. It comes with responsibilities. Running an open relay hurts other people. You also need two mail servers each with a static public ip adress from a different ip range and you must be able to add their public signing keys to your domains dns record.

I’d say if your willing to invest time and money because you like the technology and have fun doing it: absolutely go for it, if you think it’s a fire and forget weekend project then save your time…

  • As others already pointed out: the additional context information. So while I probably got the initial idea of the photo, adding the information that this crown was from the louvre heist, added a new layer of information. Now I could also laugh about the probably unintended joke that he tried to steal his royality back. It just makes the photo so much more interesting.

  • Maybe try to find a Discord with an interesting topic. Or try gaming, for example join a guild in “Where winds meet” (free game). Or if you speak a second language try conversationexchange.com and find a language partner.

You meet people there and can write/speak to them. Also don’t tell them about your situation, just try to “blend in” (won’t work for conversationexchange.com since this is more private). No one wants to be bothered with the problems of unknown people. Ask open questions either about the common topic or about the other person. Try to learn about them. Most people are flattered when you show genuine interest in what the do/like.

If you want to meet people try an app for your region where people meet (meetup or something). Choose something where you either hear a talk with a get together afterwards or where people do someting together (eg bord gaming session, hiking). It helps to have something in common to talk about.

If there’s a cafe/little shop near you go there regularly. The staff will recognise you and chat a bit after some time. But please remember, it’s their work, don’t bother them to much. They mostly only show interest because they have to. But chances are you’ll meet other people there who want someone to speak to.

If you only want to speak to someone “to stay sane” try to get a therapist or call a helpline for that. They are trained to help you or can give you contacts who can.

Random people usually have their own problems and don’t want to hear about yours. For that you need to make friends which is a long process. To find a friend you need to spend a long time with the person and the older we get the less time we have. But there are also groups for finding friends in your area. It’s a common problem.

You can also volunteer for something, for example an animal shelter or a food bank. They’re always glad if someone is willing to help and you meet people. If that is to much, try walking dogs for an animal shelter. Visit a dog park (even without a dog). You’ll have a conversation in no time. Ask about their dogs. Say you’ll think of getting one, what they would recommend for you.

So don’t despair and good luck!

  • I am not arguing against an effect system. They can help in certain circumstances. But none of the reasons in the article are one of them. Also the article is a bit lopsided because the real pain with these systems is error handling, resource handling like transactions or parallelism etc.

What you write about the “other benefits” profiling and logging is also not the reason to introduce such a system.

What does an api request has to do with business logic?

It feels a bit as if you just discovered the idea of effect systems and are now trying to justify to use it no matter what. 😉

  • However, I think it’s safe to say this architecture is effectively AI-native.

Lol…at first I thought the article wasn’t satire until I found the AI part. Well done.

Summary: Hey, let’s add another abstraction layer so we don’t need to mock these calls, but we don’t test what happends in that pesky database call, because we would need to mock that somehow. But now we need AI to handle the abstraction layer.

I think I’ll use this article as a basis for discussion for job interviews.

    Thanks.

I have an io10. It is not worth it. The 3D Tracking does not work reliable for me. The cleaning result seem to be good, but you can get that from a cheaper model too. io6 or something. The new brush heads are expensive, but good imho. Also the app only works for one person, sharing with different brushes does not work. Battery is not replaceable. Won’t buy again.
