If you get really sick, the government’s got your back. Your employer can’t fire you, or they’ll get in serious legal trouble with that nosey, meddling government. If you get so sick you can’t work anymore, you’re entitled to social benefits. That’s what those high taxes go towards.
Meanwhile, Moscow Mitch enjoys 72 days of sick leave and zero repercussions at our expense as taxpayers.

In a lot of cases we need to spend the time setting up an appointment and traveling to it to pay a doctor to write a note to prove we are sick.
So we need permission and we have to pay for it.
I think the latter part went without saying.
It is worth pointing out that there are frequently additional steps and costs in addition to getting permission from your job to be sick. Anyone outside the US would be unaware of this additional cost and effort.
You can tell your society is sick when a headline of the same story in another country could be “The United States requires coworkers to give up sick days so that sicker coworkers don’t lose their jobs.”
