Cairo: An 18-year-old Egyptian died after rescuing six people from drowning off the coast of Alexandria, turning what began as a heroic rescue into a tragedy.
According to local authorities, Ziad Mohamed Ahmed Mahmoud spotted several people struggling in the water after strong waves carried them away from the shoreline at Bitash Beach in the city’s Agami district.
Without hesitation, he entered the sea and managed to bring the six people safely back to shore. However, as he attempted to return himself, he was overpowered by the waves and swept out to sea.
My interpretation was he went out, brought one back. Rinse repeat. As for bringing the last person, maybe it was bad timing and they got close to shore and the last person was strong enough to complete the trek, but he was not, given that he just rescued several people?
I’m just guessing here.
If somebody’s untrained moving that many people out of danger in the water could certainly cause enough exhaustion to kill you.
Lifeguard at a pool has an elevated position and can jump pretty damn close to people, and even then they have a personal flotation device that they can use to get somebody to the edge of a pool pretty quickly.
