The Abstract Expressionists emerged from obscurity in the late 1940s to establish New York as the centre of the art world. But were they pawns of US spies in the Cold War?
I hope BBC is a credible source because I read it all the time.
I mean, their main rival the Soviet Union doesn’t even exist anymore so most people chalk that up as a win, yes. Obviously you can argue about how the US is doing currently, or that their main rival just shifted over to China, or whatever you want really. But when most people think of “the Cold War” it was between the US and the USSR and currently only one of those remains standing
in 2016, Russia, the successor state to the USSR, under the direction of its president, a former KGB agent, through a campaign of propaganda targeted at the American public, managed to install their agent into the presidency of the US, which did massive harm to the US economy, government institutions, and social cohesion and stability. to me that sounds like Cold War actors achieving Cold War goals through Cold War means
if Putin doesn’t think the Cold War is over, then it’s not over
I’m aware of Putin’s existence, history, and practices. I’m also aware that a lot in the world changed in the 25 years between 1991 and 2016. I’d be willing to hear an argument that Putin is trying to start Cold War 2, there’s some truth to that. But the first one? The consensus amongst most of the world is that it’s over and the US won. One man’s amition or opinion does not undo history, no matter what position he holds
