But also it’s odd because The Verge doesn’t do paywalls to my knowledge and when I tested the link in another browser I didn’t see a paywall either…

See the DMCA Takedown Notices section. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bypass_Paywalls_Clean Currently it’s being hosted and maintained on GitFlic by a Russian company that works with their state enforcement agencies including the Russian Army. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RusBITech I’m not knowledgeable enough to say it’s fine or not but considering the current source it’s not an extension I’d be comfortable using.
