one of the biggest problems is the gatekeeping role that Google plays with AOSP. No patches that the company dislikes get into AOSP, regardless of what a wider community might think of them.

Everything is gonna have back doors. Besides, the phones are all manufactured in China, what’s stopping them from altering production or creating clones with back doors? Heck, an iPhone sold in China probably gives the CCP access to the front door, so to speak.
