There is no question over the last 10 years the quality and production level of Chinese developed games has seem to sky rocket. Many of these games even being free to play. But honestly I haven’t played a single one. For the same reasons I refused to download TikTok.
China is a well known surveillance state. I worry downloading and playing these games especially on a PC or mobile phone would just be a huge privacy risk.
Am I being to paranoid ? Are there some regulations I’m not aware of that might protect me anyway ?
I feel like I’m missing out on some really high quality visually striking games because of it
Not sure why you brought the nationality of the devs into this, but I don’t trust games in general, at least without some kind of containerisation or sandboxing. If I wanted tons of people to run my data mining trojan and not pay attention to things like processor load or network traffic, I’d probably make it a game.
I think you should avoid playing this types of games. Their community is better without you.
As a US resident:
If China wants my data while the US treats them as a hostile entity? That’s WORLDS better than US companies having my data, and handing it over to the NSA without a warrant.
There is no precedent of China meddling on someone elses business, let alone a random civilian, so not only it is crazy to assume so it’s also inherently racist. The US does have precedent of it for what it’s worth yet you’re not distrustful of them. You’re a victim of state sponsored propaganda.
Yeah what the hell are they gonna do with the data, realize Americans are inconsolably insane? I hope so!
The idea of misconduct in Chinese companies being worse than the USA is nakedly insane, they haven’t had a breast milk theft incident AFAIK. Looking forward to the same idiotic assumptions about Vietnam’s games. Shit is booming, give it a decade tho. Actually all the apps here are domestic now it rules. Vietnam & China’s biggest privacy failings show themselves when I browse electronics for an HDMI adapter and it only works for Windows, or the aforementioned apps use Google Play services. That is getting better though! Google is on thin ice this whole region, & Windows on its way out in China
Ummm if you’re really serious about privacy wouldn’t you have already switched to GrapheneOS and Linux? Like people who actually care about this stuff avoid Google, Microsoft… and proprietary software like the plague
If surveillance is the worry shouldn’t that same skepticism apply beyond just China? I dunno it kinda feels less about privacy and more about a specific distrust, you know?
Proprietary software is fine (if sandboxed)
US is also surveillance state
They have CIA they have espionage they have all sorts of things. They don’t have full state owned media. They don’t get by default access to your data. Companies can and have refused.
To say China and the US are the same for their citizens is just stupid …
Oh you sweet summer child. The US government is the preeminent surveillance state. Just last week they reauthorized warrantless wiretaps for US citizens. After 9/11 they began collecting all digital communication and storing it forever. Look up Edward Snowden like the other comment suggested.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/apr/30/fisa-warrantless-spying-renewal-congress
Keywords: NSA, Edward Snowden, United States v. Moalin
Keyword: Palantir.
They aren’t the same, the US is far worse. Why is it bad for media to be publicly owned, in a country where the working classes control the state? In the US Empire, the CIA and NSA already spy on everyone, and capitalists control all media and the state.
The US gov darling right now that is receiving all the “security and defence” contracts is a company named Palantir, a word appropiated from Tolkien’s novels that literally means “those that watch”. 😂😂😂😂😂 And you are here worrying about China.
The CIA literally controls like most important universities and papers the world over, they have infinite money, welcome to the site 💀
Why would it matter if they’re not the same?
Both can be surveillance states, but in different points on the spectrum.
Just because country A is worse than country B doesnt make country B good.
Both countries are surveillance states that shouldnt be trusted.
The main thing is that OP is not chinese, is american and is worried about Chinese surveillance and not american one.
IDK. I don’t trust Chinese (closed-source) software either. I believe TikTok does gather a ton of data (though it’s not Chinese now). On the other hand, I will likely never go to China, so there’s not much the CCP could do to me (maybe blackmail me if I was a politician or something); while the opposite is true for the US.
Why would you never visit China?
Mostly just cost. Broke as hell. Would be nice to visit if I could justify the expense at some point in my life.
Fair enough! Same.
I should not say crazy so much as racist. The idea of a westerner calling China a “well known surveillance state” without irony is farcical. What exactly are you worried will happen?
yes
Do you not trust American made games?
I don’t trust anything that goes online
Yes. Might need to dissect some stuff internally
Incredibly so yes
China isn’t any more of a surveillance state than the US and Europe already. Why would a Chinese game be any worse than the ways you’re spied on by people that can actually do something with your data? Wherever you live, assuming it isn’t China, your data is already being collected by people far more capable of doing something about it if they found something they didn’t like, and far more interested in doing so.
Let’s face it, the CPC almost certainly doesn’t care about you, and it would be better for the PRC to have your data than your local government and corporations, that do care far more about you. I don’t see why fearing a developing socialist state so much makes any sense.
My question for the yankees who worry about “Chinese technology spying” on them: Can the CPC send death squads to your house?
yes, you are
But not just China…
I hate liberals so much it’s unreal.
Im not meant to harbor hatred in my heart, but here we are living in the haters multiverse. When in Rome…
