An international research team led by Silke Britzen of the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy has discovered the first direct evidence of a pair of supermassive black holes at the center of the galaxy Markarian 501. These black holes could merge in as short as 100 years. The findings are based on decades of radio observations, which for the first time reveal two central jets.
