As soon as Donald Trump had finished kidnapping the president of Venezuela, he once again set his sights on Greenland. Trump advisor and fascist ghoul Stephen Miller said on TV that the island should “obviously … be part of the United States.” Channeling Hitler, Miller continued: “We live in a world, in the real world … that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power. These are the iron laws of the world since the beginning of time.”

Bourgeois Europe was shocked by Trump’s “unbridled imperialism,” in the words of Spiegel magazine. The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the UK, and Denmark put out a joint statement: “Greenland belongs to its people,” they recited. “It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide.”

But why is it for Denmark to decide, even before Greenland? Miller has a point when he asks: “By what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland?”

Imperialism

Imperialist powers want Greenland as climate change opens up the Arctic to shipping and mining. They don’t even feign interest in the well-being of the indigenous people of Kalaallit Nunaat. Danish colonialism has been particularly brutal, ripping hundreds of babies away from their mothers, while sterilizing thousands of women without their consent. U.S colonialism would be no less devastating, turning the island into a staging ground for World War III.

A supposed leftist like Chris Cutrone, the founder of the odious Platypus Society, claims that the imperialist conquest of Greenland would be a continuation of the American revolution. But the peoples of Puerto Rico or Guam can say whether the U.S. today represents a democratic alternative to European colonialism.

If the U.S. army were to invade Greenland to seize its resources, that would be pure barbarism—but the Danish “claim” is based on violent conquest several centuries earlier. No one has any democratic mandate. Miller stated very openly that Greenland has just 30,000 inhabitants (in reality, 57,000) and he doesn’t care what they think. But EU policy has just as little interest in self-determination.

While EU leaders say Greenland belongs to its people—and to Denmark, apparently—France still denies self-determination to the Kanak people of New Caledonia. Spanish imperialism clings on to Ceuta and Melilla. The UK keeps a navy base on the Malvinas Islands. etc.

The European statement talks about “sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders”—but these principles didn’t stop NATO from attacking Afghanistan, Iraq, or Libya. Denmark’s imperialist military participated in all these crimes.

“Territorial integrity” didn’t apply when the EU backed independence for Kosovo or South Sudan. Many European governments recognize Palestine—but have done nothing at all to defend that state’s sovereignty.

Fellow Imperialists

Trying to appease Trump, Danish politicians are emphasizing they are fellow imperialists. “We’re Already on Your Side,” one social democrat screamed in the direction of the White House. They also want to use Greenland for military buildup, to control the Arctic, and to extract rare earths.

The European Union likes to present itself as a bastion of liberal values and international law. Yet as they continue to support the genocide in Gaza, they are showing the whole world that the “rules-based international order” is, at most, window dressing to cover up their own imperialist interests. Despite all the propaganda about the dangers of Russia and China, NATO remains one of the deadliest organization in the history of humanity.

The only people who should decide on Greenland’s fate are its indigenous population. In the age of growing inner-imperialist tensions, only socialists are defending such an elementary democratic right. Anyone serious about democracy and self-determination needs to call for the break up of NATO and the end of imperialism.

You are exercizing defective logic. Blaming people for their governmdnt, a logic that 100 percent would justify doing the worst to you too.

All to celebrate the ones most committing abuses gaining absolute power and committing manyfold more abuses, on their own people, and others.

It is such dumb, mean spirited, and ignorant logic one would think people would be too embarrassed to use it. But this is 2026.

Not in the case of the second Trump mandate. The world can blame that on the USA population, most of us understand what a majority means. I’m sorry but it was the American people who released this devil to the world. It’s their responsibility to end it.

You say that. But they need client state status or would be subjugated. Or at best despoiled by corporations, left with poisoned water and coastal areas they rely on.

Denmark is a far sight better than the us/uk.

unlike the us which isn’t raped by corporations? you all come up with the best mental gymnstics to avoid self determination. if greenland is subjugated is not because of they have sovereignty, it’s because of imperialism. how about them having sovereignty and denmark still providing military support or whatever if that’s the thing that’s bad, how about reparations because of colonialism?

Wtf are you trying to argue an unrelated point?

They need client state status, would be taken/despoiled by more malign forces without it.

You are what making moral arguments? Those are neither here nor there. You are telling denmark to reject their patron? To surrender to the us. Brilliant take, maybe you can remind the us it is not nice to despoil them?

no, i understand perfectly the material reality upon which the greenlanders are faced. my point is that you shouldn’t be disregarding their will because some fucked up shit. they don’t need client status or whatever, they don’t need to be a colony of anyone. the colony status doesn’t mean shit, the EU is going to fucking gift them to the us and the colony status or no sovereignty or whatever bullshit doesnt matter because the eu is usa b*****

But the thing is, Denmark does not assert any claim to Greenland, nor do they profit from it. Infact, Greenland has chosen not to be independent because they do not have the funds to do so. Denmark funds their healtcare, schools, pensioners and so on. Greenland has the option to hold an election and go independent, but have chosen not to. Denmark would save a lot of money if Greenland claimed their independence, but they are part of the kingdom of Denmark by choice.

Your comment seems wildly innacurate considering all five political parties in Greenland just released a joint statement that included (article):

“We do not want to be Americans, we do not want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders”

If you ask Greenlanders if they want to be independent, they generally prefer independence.

If you ask Greenlanders if they want to be independent if it means a lower quality of life, they generally prefer to stay part of Denmark.

Denmark subsidizes Greenland to the cost of over €500 million a year. To replace that subsidy, Greenland would need to self generate over €8,700 per person per year. It would also need to do so in a manner that doesn’t invite American intervention.

That is not a bad thing, their currency on their own would be ultra vulnerable to corporations, hedgies, governments. Without denmark mining interests would take the place in all but name.

Hedgies could crash it with little effort, or any number of other dirty tricks. Then get us courts to rule against them in any dispute, seize their assets, ships, goods, freeze accounts. They could get the executive involved.

The parasitic firms would tear them up one way or another, a lot worse, without denmark and that stable currency.

I’d love to see how they could do that without being allowed to speculate on the currency and under rigid currency controls. Currency sovereignty means they can literally control who has the currency, speculators can’t just buy it on the free market. A speculator would have to somehow acquire mass amounts of currency by trading physical goods or something else with real value for it (so no coming in with fistfulls of dollars and demanding they sell currency), and the government would be able to turn away customers that don’t pass certain requirements.

Of course then the US declares them “currency manipulators” like it does to any country that asserts its currency sovereignty and hits them with sanctions, but it doesn’t look like they’re safe from the US as-is so I don’t really see much of a difference.

This reeks of “the master protects his slaves and that’s why slaves benefit from being enslaved”

Literally Greenlanders: We do not want to be colonized by the gringos or the danish

libs: Greenlanders choose to be part of some stupid monarchy

please show me any proof there was actually any legal intention of having sovereignty, there wasn’t, you know why? because the government is run by danish or compradors, of course they’re not going to want sovereignty because it fills their pockets. maybe you should try stop spreading colonialist ideas as if they were objective truths.
