Black bears are basically just big dogs, I feel like having one for a size comparison doesn’t really do justice to that giant skeleton
I often wonder if black bears didn’t evolve to be less threatening since humans came to North America. They’re widespread and common and no one is trying to wipe them out. Ran into one with her two cubs and she bolted away.
They actually cull them if they have too much contact with humans. It’s incredibly sad, if they are found to be being fed or otherwise getting to cozy to people they are killed so that they don’t accidentally hurt someone. But they really are like big dogs, almost friendly to people
Gods I know. Bear wandered in the dog door while I was on vacation. My 18-yo friend watching the place had me laughing my ass off at the situation. Needed that as I had just seen my mom for the last time, dying of COVID.
Wasn’t so funny after I talked to the state bear biologist and the contractor that worked for her. He set a snare in my yard, big trailer with a trap door. He was sad, biologist was sad, I was sad, but that’s how it has to go once a bear wanders in a home. Contractor went door-to-door begging people to lock their trash cans so this kind of thing doesn’t have to happen.
Yes, I thought about sabotaging the trap, but he had a trail cam on 4G recording 24x7. I might still have freed that bear if he had shown up. Anyway, kept 3 shotguns within reach for a year behind that mess. (I have a pet pig to defend that apparently the bear was after for dinner.)
He got away! Never came back thank god.

That each bigger bear is also standing forward of the smaller ones and with it’s hind legs hidden behind them exaggerates how much bigger they are.
It is comparing height paw to the shoulder, not the length. It’s the standard way to measure quadrupeds.
