    Serious question:
    What would be the correct order?
    Because we write in an english first space given name + surname or because the original might be titled in a japanese(/asian?) order surname + given name?

    I always get confused with names in animes/manga because I am never sure what the relationship is like if they arent common like “Takeshi” or “Itsuki”.

      Which one you might use depends on context. Nether order is wrong exactly.

      Sakura is the surname here.

        With Hololive I am already partly aware (already too deep lol).
        But for newer franchises and games it’s really annoying if the subs switch it from the jp-dialogue. (And I prefer if the translation keeps the honorifics and doesnt try to localize them).

          With holo you get actual inconsistency, where EN members can be surname first or second, and you just kinda have to know :D

            Not even just EN, there’s also “Aki Rosenthal”, “Laplus Darknesss”, “Astel Leda”…

            I’ve always figured that “Japanese-sounding surname = Japanese order, otherwise English one”, but then you also have the exceptions like “Ceres Fauna” or “Gavis Bettel”… I guess they just randomly choose the order that sounds better (?)

          Imo, subs should definitely keep the original order, just because of the “weirdness” in reading them if they’re reversed.

          As for other “types” of translation like Dubs or Books… I usually prefer the original order anyway, but I can see why some localization teams would prefer to “swap” the order to make it easier for western fans (as long as they don’t actually swap name and surname like 4Kids did sometimes lol)

              The one I know of is in Yu-Gi-Oh (the DM series)

              Some context: In JP the “main gang” mostly call each other by surname, while in the US version it’s by name. “Bakura Ryou” (Japanese order) is one of the few characters that technically didn’t have his name changed in the US version, but the rest of the main group keeps calling him “Bakura”. If you watch the series it just feels kinda off, but if you look at all the promotional material, it’s because apparently, in the US version, “Bakura” is the name, and “Ryou” is the surname.

              The people outside the Translation team probably didn’t even look at the original series and just thought “well, they always call him Bakura, must be his name!”
