And no one was even home. It was amazon’s own automated response.
So, a (very likely malicious) delivery person falsely accused this customer of racism and Amazon shut down EVERY smart device connected to their servers? And when the customer sent video proof to clear themselves, Amazon didn’t even reply, just quietly reinstated the account?
Imagine not being able to exit your house in the future because Jeff Bezos decided to disable your smart doorknob because someone falsely accused you of whatever ism is popular at that time?
If someone is merely considering moving away from a third-party-permission-based household after being denied using their home on seemingly false pretenses, is it reasonable to say they deserve it happening to them again?
I guess sometimes children have to play with fire to learn caution.
I wouldn’t say they deserve it but I also wouldn’t have any sympathy for them when it happens again.
By accepting this and not shutting down the service/system they’ve created a precedence for their family and an example of forgivness towards digital corporate home invasion to others. That’s a small chisel to the castle walls that is the average persons home.
If one say yes to keep such a system after such an experience… Perhaps they should be banned from using digital home equipment? For their own protection I mean, they’re clearly not able to make rational decisions lol.

If you must have smart home crap, make it yourself and make sure it never touches the internet, especially cameras.
I have a raspberry pi camera running but it’s behind two layers of authentication so should be fine.
I wouldn’t trust it. Maybe I am just more paranoid than a normal person though. If there is a way to get in, I assume someone will eventually.
I open and close ports. I don’t leave them open all the time but when I leave for a vacation I open them. I do have a ssh port open but it’s set to only allow key auth and not passwords. Also I don’t run it on the default port.
You’re doing more for security than most would, at least.
I saw to many telegram channels of people’s ip camera’s. For a while before telegram banned them you could just look at people walking around their little California mansions naked.
I remember finding a site about a decade or so ago that would open a random unsecured camera feed when you loaded the page. You could see everything from empty living rooms to children’s bedrooms. Ever since, I have removed or covered the cameras on every device I own. Just the thought of having my privacy invaded like that and not even knowing about it bothers me too much.
