Historically irc has been used for many things. Chat is just one of its main purposes, but there is virtually no limitations what you can use it for especially with upcoming IRCv3 (https://ircv3.net/)

I was talking about; https://lemmy.ml/c/opendirectories it shows page 404, and when I tried creating it it says already exists. So maybe it existed on lemmy.ml at one point and it was deleted or banned?

USENET (NZB) is different from IRC (XDCC), USENET has more content but useally paid, IRC is completely free and can be easier to automate.

The Eye archive is down since Nov/2025 and it dosn’t seem to be coming back anytime soon. I think its more than hard drive failure. And even if it was hard drive failure its a very bad practice having a public facing website on same hard drive where you store your data.
