Usually, they’re speaking from a place of privilege. There are many people who can’t rely on police to protect them (poor people, people of color, etc.), and if we have empathy, that should be all of our concern

I think some cops probably have empathy.
“Have empathy” is a low bar. They’re still people who have chosen to be cops, so still a net negative.
I do agree with you on that. The profession as a whole needs to be reworked though. It’s out of control.
