I think PS5 and its same gen xbox equivilant are at a point where they aren’t even utilising the power of the newer consoles anymore. If a game is possible to release on Nintendo Switch, AND PS5, that’s insane. The Switch is essentially a tablet from 2012. It was intentionally underpowered even at time of release.
Look at NES games from 1985. Now look at NES games from 1993. Same system. But they began utilising the system properly. They began pushing the system to the max.
I feel like modern consoles are holding back to accomodate the previous gen. This game is coming out for PS5 AND PS4 because nobody is buying PS5. So you gotta release it for PS4. So why even release a PS5 if you’re not going to advance it?
The thing is making a game that pushes the PS5 must have an obscene budget. How do you even leverage all that tech? It’s “more detailed graphics”, “more stuff on screen”, "more effects ", etc. You need to create, design and program those assets to a very detailed level, lots of people hours. And you’d end up spending millions for a game which would end up being exclusive to PS5, which gives it less chance to sell to a wider audience and make that money back. It’s a big risk.

Well, current-gen needs some exclusives that would make people want to upgrade. First party, and big 3rd party do that. Smaller games have to go where the people are. No one is going to upgrade to next generation for “Raiden Nova”, so they don’t have much of a choice.
Not to mention, with how powerful last-gen was (even if we discount Switch), most indies can easily run on them without any downgrade, so why not release on them.
Though, in general, I completely agree with you, and have stated that myself many times.
