Whenever I see pictures like this I always wonder where on the Earth it’s from.
This looks to me like right above the capsule is the Nile River flowing down to Cairo and the delta and into the Mediterranean. And the larger body of water in the top left is the Red Sea. North is down and to the left.

You should check out pictures of the pyramids. Egypt looks like it goes on forever!
I’m reasonably confident you’re correct that desert is too big to be anywhere else really.
