Dr. Doom, the masked fellow pictured, is a bombastic and verbose comic book villain who, nevertheless, maintains a strange sense of honor and merit (at least when he’s written well). A kind of ‘equal-opportunity evil’, if you will.
Recently, there was a big hubbub in the Olympics over whether a female boxer was trans (she was not). Once the transphobes had spent themselves finding out that she was AFAB, lived as a woman, was a woman on all her identification, had been part of women’s sports for years, and lived in the not-quite-LGBT-friendly country of Algeria, they decided that they needed to examine her chromosomes, just to be sure, because gods forbid the paranoia of transphobes ever be unjustified. JK Rowling, predictably, got in on the controversy with a terrible take, because she’s TERF trash, saying that the winning boxer was actually a man.
Dr. Doom here is portrayed, thus, as an ‘equal opportunity evil’ while taking a hostage, with the implication being that JK Rowling (and others online) are lambasting or applauding his current actions from a transphobic standpoint. Doom muses, with mocking and acrid humor, that no one cared about the chromosomal component when he took the very-traditionally-feminine wife of his nemesis hostage compared to whoever the hell he’s taking hostage now; the joke thus implying that he is, truly, egalitarian in his outlook and is genuinely disdainful of those who are not, like, say, JK Rowling harassing women AFAB because she needs to have a transphobe moment.
