I’ve been autistic with sensory issues all my life. I’m about to turn 51. All I can tell you youngsters is that it does get easier with time and your coping mechanisms do improve.
Thank you for the advice. I have been recently (self-) diagnosed (43f), and it’s been tough. It wasn’t tough before as I had no clue, but now I am having a hard time because I recognize i was having a hard time before (and still), but my previous coping mechanisms stopped working. Gotta develop some new ones…
There is a pattern where people who are not as good at something become really good at it because they have to actually try to compensate.
I often struggle with balance-coordination just navigating my house, but i can hold my balance standing on something narrow real good. (I bet this is not uncommon with light dcd)
filtering sensory information is also one of those things. There are records of autistic people holding up trough extremely stressful and sensatory experiences simply because their battlehardend from ordinary life.
