Sometimes I read sentences over again, sit and think for a few seconds about what I just read, search words I’m not sure about, etc.
Reading fast isn’t a useful skill in most circumstances.
Comprehension literally is the whole point. Why read faster when you can read deeper and get more out of the text
What if you are in an existential horror situation where you have a cursed book that your future is written in but you were just given it, bears are hunting you, the book is thousands of pages, is written in the style of Henry James and the later parts only appear if you read everything preceding?
