I am buying a house because fuck landlords. I’m being kicked out of my place by ‘no fault’ and I’ve had enough of living at the whims of another money hording person being a dick… Ok rant part over… This new house is old and a bit beat up but solid enough to start a life in. It also has a big (by my standard) garden which I have no idea what to outside of just ‘plant stuff’. I don’t have measurements or know the size of anything, but I want to somehow give some of my space to those who don’t have any and make it a place to share. Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts?
Garden planting time is already over so you can’t plant much this year since it’s July. You can plant some quick growers that are cold tolerant potentially but you missed most of this year. Which isn’t a problem because there’s tons of prep that you can do next year.
I would recommend reading some books about permaculture or organic gardening to get some basics but you are going to be basically growing your soil this year which is the key to sustainable good gardening. If you a spot in mind you can start Sheet Mulching right now. You can mow down whatever is there and cover with cardboard boxes (great use for those moving boxes) and then start covering with more material throughout the year. This a great way to start. You can also start Solarizing a place if you want to seed. If your in North America fall seeding works amazing for natives and it takes a few hot months to kill all the weeds seeds from a site so it’s perfect to get started on it.
As far as engaging community start by contacting master gardener programs which usually have regular meetings. You can also give your extra vegetables (next year) to your neighbors which is a great way to build connections.
Well thats just false. So many things want to be planted in the autumn so they can enjoy not so hot temps and come up vigorously next year. This includes most bulbs and wildflower seeds. 8ts going be be pretty zone dependent, but mid summer can be a good time to plant certain crops including some winter vegetables.
You’re totally right. I was giving advice about zone 4b/5a where I live (classic internet gardening advice about different zones). If you live south of here you have much more growing seasons for cooler weather vegetables in Autumn and winter crops. We just don’t with a first frost in mid-october and hard frost a week or two behind. We only get salad greens with the short time between too hot and frozen.
I did forget about bulbs. Go hard for bulbs to get yourself ready for spring.
