      While I get what you’re saying, it’s not a cast-iron rule.

Last week I told off one of my trainees for running in the building, and yet I split up with my ex because she moved to a different city to start her own business … both of them are 24.

How was the experience of being in a relationship with someone exactly half your age? Asking from a place of genuine curiosity not judgement. Sounds the ex moved through life with more maturity than the trainee?

So, I can’t imagine dating someone with the maturity of my trainee - and that’s not a boy thing either, since our new intern is a girl of 21 who isn’t very mature either.

Meanwhile, my ex had moved away from home young, lived and worked on her own in another city, and completed teacher training in yet another city. When I met her she was living back with her parents (and as is typical of many families here, her sister, nephew, and brother-in-law too), and she already had a plan for starting her business.

We met very randomly through a mutual friend, and clicked right from the start in a talking all night kind of way. For the most part it was like dating anyone, except that she’d occasionally mention something jarring that reminded me of the age difference.

A couple of times I caught myself saying something to her that was like a mother would say to a daughter, but it didn’t hurt the relationship because she specifically wanted a ‘dommy mommy’ thing in the bedroom.

It wouldn’t have worked in the long term, the power imbalance would have got out of hand, but I very much love her, and if she turned up on my doorstep today I wouldn’t hesitate to have her back.

The only weird part of it was interacting with her father, who is younger than me (though neither of us told him that!)

        Edit:

How weird is it to be 45 and feel like you’re 30 until you talk to someone who’s actually 30 and suddenly you feel 🫩
