I feel like this is just using the word as defined. The Lord of the Rings is absolutely a franchise, even if you’re only talking about books. LotR itself, the Hobbit, the Silmarillion, and all the Lost Tales books are all in a shared space, but are separate works. What makes it a franchise.

How about not calling the lord of the rings a fucking franchise? Not everything has to be a franchise and absolutely milked dry.
