The only videos/pictures I mainly see of India don’t explicitly try to show india in a negative light, but implicity do. Stuff like videos of people using their bare feet as tools to work on items, unsanitary restaurant conditions, etc.

I’ve never been to India (on my list), I love Indian people, their culture, and especially their food. Because of that, I’m relatively certain those videos are hand picked to go viral, but I don’t have anything real to compare it to (my own experience). But also, the disgust seems very manufactured, with frequent racist comments as well in those posts.

Has anybody else noticed this?

Every country has it’s stereotypes, justified or unjustified. I’ve been there. And I felt there is no “India”. There are a million combinations of cultures and attitudes and ethics.

I experienced the stereotypical stuff, I experienced the stuff that is normal but never known outside - because Internet be the Internet.

A lot if overstated - both good and bad. I say the same thing about Russia, Singapore, China, Japan, Alaska, Iran, Dubai, Iceland, Argentina, Morocco, Ushuaia, Chile, and Paraguay. I traveled a lot in my life and no place stands the test of a prolonged stay and shattered your narrow preconceptions - good and bad.

It is ironic that people think they “know” a lot, while actually not being so. Life and the world and the people in it are complex.

The way to start is to not take what you see on social media as the whole picture.
