Not that the usage wasn’t a problem before, but that more people are using even more electron apps now than ever, hence their “industry standard” comment.

These things are not connected in the way the meme suggests. Is it more problematic since memory is more expensive? Sure, maybe for some people running old hardware that want to upgrade. Otherwise, a lot of people already have plenty of memory to run these apps.
