Deep dive on why Meta need to be totally boycotted.
People here will know all this, but please share with your less knowledgable friends and family so they can realise the truth: Meta products need to be dumped!
i wouldn´t even know how to fight it. outright banning meta, google and openai services would mess up everything… we dug our own grave and continue doing so.
us few individuals who are conscious abt it get ridiculed for speaking out…
oh well. it´s over.
Banning openai is the equivalent of banning caramel. Sure, it’s gonna be missing, but there’s a million other candies and most people (outside of tech) wouldn’t even really realize it, if they weren’t told.
Google and Meta are different, because they are long standing quasi-monopolies. But even then we could move away from things like search or social media. Services that are more engrained and less visible are going to be the main enemy here.
And no, we’re not doomed. Far from it. This space is in the middle of development. Nothing is set in stone, giants fall left and right, new ones emerge aside them. You’re doing a doomerism.
What is the rest of Google (alphabet) doing?
Things like ad services, Android, other OSs, Hosting/Cloud, lot’s of other stuff. Wikipedia is a good resource.
it´s good to hear level headed takes on this among a environment that causes a doomer mindset :)
You’re welcome. :)
Sadly I cannot get my family or friends off messenger, will never happen, so im stuck. Same with discord.
I have 2 contacts on Signal. Thats all ive managed to convince.
Just delete the shit. If they care, they’ll find a way to stay in touch.
Yeah they wouldn’t. They are no where near techy enough.
Letter. Also, people are suprisingly capable if they have no other choice. Don’t see it as an ultimatum. See it as an “I’m doing somehing good for me, this will impact our relationship, I provide a solution to that impact.”.
Reported originally by Gizmodo: and referenced here. They regularly suppressed right wing content in users’ news feeds
Is OP a fascist? Blocking right wing content is good. That’s how you prevent genocides like the one in Myanmar.
it doesn´t matter, the fact they try to control narratives is what´s concerning. “right wing news” is an inaccurate description. it could be news against dems in the 2016 election cycle, it can be news promoting republicans in 2016, it can be straight up “misinformation” or it could be factual news from an outlet they deem “problematic”
Right wing content is usually mis- and disinformation and actively dangerous to society like antivax rhetoric, literal Russian propaganda, and general hate speech. Fuck aaaaaaalll that noise.
Showing that they blocked right wing stuff in the past, and now align with the right wing, demonstrates that big tech doesn’t care about sides - they just want money and power.
I am moving friends and relatives from Whatsapp to Signal and Matrix (Element X) and it works. But as for Instagram and Facebook I do not see ways how to move them away from there. They both are more difficult to be replacable. Just BlueSky worked once for this switch.
Meta’s headquarters are located in Ireland, so that is where they are regulated for the EU jurisdiction. Sarah Wynn-Williams revealed in her book Careless People that the Irish government was especially close to Meta, even giving them a ‘special phone’
Yet they fined them billions of euros.
Meta isn’t located in Ireland so they can be cozy with government officials and do evil privacy things. They’re located in Ireland as a tax shelter. See Double Irish and Dutch Sandwich
Who the fuck locks away their online marketplace behind an accountwall. I can’t even buy used shit in Slovenia anymore. The online stores we used to use are way less populated.
Can’t open the timelines without JavaScript.
If op is here, look into HTML details. There’s an accessible way to do this, without locking privacy-conscious users out of some subset of your article’s content.
yeah i’m here. You mean without the ?tracker part to the URL…?
It’s a Ghost blog and that gets added automatically - I’d rather it wasn’t there but I don’t know how to stop that, sorry.
No, there’s some dropdown for two timelines that you’re supposed to click to expand. They do nothing when you click them in Tor Browser on Strict mode.
Just view your own article in Tor Browser on Strict mode, and see what doesn’t work
It’s no surprise that enforcement of regulation has been lax over the years. and has only become worse in 2025 when Ireland appointed an ex-Meta lobbyist as the head of the Irish DPC (Data Protection Commission).
Yet they’ve been fined
hundreds of millionsbillions of euros for violations of GDPR…Smells like misinformation
With that much voting power why even bother having a public company.
Money
But still no one is willing to move to another platform. I have talked to many of my friends about moving to a more secure platform for messaging or social media, but nobody is willing to move because everyone they know is on a platform developed by meta. And I think they are right, it is impossible to make everyone individually switch, we need new rules and regulations being put in place in order to at least protect some parts of the lives of us and everyone around us.
we need to bridge content, selectively. even if it’s against the meta terms of service.
I love the article but it’s too long for the average fb user to keep their attention I’m afraid. Perhaps keep the introduction shorter.
Great work otherwise!
Don’t sacrifice quality by making it shorter. Just do tl;Dr, bolded key points throughout, and pullquotes for emphasis
