I keep seeing posts pop up that I relate to, then I look down and it’s from an ADHD community. Either these are experiences everyone has… Or I have undiagnosed ADHD

They are memes, they want to express that “do you also know that feeling when…” feeling. The more people can relate, the more up votes it gets. This meme community does not aim at being medically correct. That’s at least my guess, I feel the same as you.

The best response I heard to this is “Everybody pees, too, but if you’re doing it 60 times a day, then you have a problem”.

A lot of ADHD symptoms are common in neurotypical people too. The main difference I’ve been told is the frequency of occurrence and impact on quality of life.

A neurotypical person may have this same thing occur, maybe even frequently, but it’s not a constant factor in every facet of their life that causes them problems and eventual distress.

Ah ok, that makes a lot of sense.

Thank you for taking the time to construct such a helpful comment.

Spend some time learning about ADHD. Maybe you will understand yourself better, but if not you will at least understand other people better.

Getting good mental health is difficult, at least in the country I live in. It took me about 15 years to get an ADHD diagnosis, because for most of my life I’ve had lousy health insurance and I couldn’t afford to see a good therapist or psychiatrist.

This or sit down to read a chapter before bed, look up and it’s 6 hours later and I have to pee and I haven’t touched my glass of water and my alarm goes off in 4 hours

    Never in between

I deleted the bird app off phone and deleted my shitposting account and it’s freed up so much time, I’ve started reading again.

It was sorta reading before, but then I started just getting better at it when my attention wasn’t being stolen. I challenged myself to finishing a book in 4 days while taking notes and it was honestly really fun and I was really pumped when I finished.

It’s a skill but also a muscle if that makes sense. I don’t think adhd inherently makes reading harder, but it definitely makes it harder to get into the groove.

I still do the shit from the meme occasionally, but i also gulped a 27 tome light novel in 4 days. You just gotta enter the flow whan reading.

Gotta push through it. Most people only retain like 80% of what they read anyway, sometimes it takes my eyes a little while to wake up to what im making them do. Sometimes it takes a page but its better to find your groove after struggling, rather than getting stressed out because you can’t process every word right away.

Reading is a skill that takes practice.

Everyone’s struggles are different though, but that’s my experience

How are people with ADHD with sitting meditation? For me, it tremendously helps with concentration in all other aspects of life.

Neurotypicals have difficulty with mindfulness; for folks with ADHD, it’s extremely difficult. You have to sit still and do nothing for an extended period of time, which is a pretty heavy lift for somebody with an attention deficit. But it does help, yes.

One method that I’ve had success with is to work my way up. I do meditation for 1 minute; the next day 2, then 3, until I get to 20, and then I try to stay there. That’s because the most important part is building the habit. Also, doing short sprints frequently is more effective than doing a marathon. 5 minutes a day for 12 days is better than 60 minutes in one day.

Don’t feel bad if you have to use your finger. Put your finger on the page, and follow your finger. That helped me.

I find a bookmark much easier to use for this purpose, since it also blocks the text below it and gives me a clear visual line to follow across the page.

I did when I learnt reading. Of course I moved my finger a lot faster, since I thought the other kids would say “wow, you read fast” instead of “you’re just pretending to read”. Anyway, by doing that, you can actually learn to read really fast. So now you have to go back a page instead of a sentence.
